Shot a big boar while deer hunting this weekend. After wrestling him onto my cart and dragging him through the creek, I got him up on the hoist and weighed him. 180 pounds. Then, when I was starting to skin him out, he smelled so bad, I just took him down and dragged him off in the weeds. Just too smelly. No pics, because my lphone battery died .

LOL, you didn't realize he was that smelly before hauling him all that way?

Step 1: Grab him by the rear legs and drag him about 20 yards.
Step 2: Spend the next 5 days trying to wash the smell of piss off your hands.
Step 3: Don't drag one again without gloves.

I make a point of not trying to save any boars over 100 lbs... Not only the initial smell, but trying to cook any parts of it without the kitchen smelling bad and trying to work around the taste of a boar.. It's just not worth the effort !

I shot one under my feeder and it was the next morning before I could drag him off. That spot smelled for a couple days later. I keep an old pair off gloves handy so I don't have to get that smell on me. Peeee You!!!!

I ate every hog I shot for 7 years, even the really big ones, and found each one delicious. I had heard the big boars could get stinky, I just hadn't seen it for myself. Then I killed a #325+ boar December of last year, and my first package of breakfast sausage stunk up the kitchen so bad that I hauled every ounce the dump 30 minutes later. No idea how I missed that stench whilst gutting him.

You know, there are a goodly number of boars that don't stink. I have killed some really large ones that didn't stink. Then again, I have killed some little ones that smelled terrible. No doubt you had a good streak going...

This is my experience too. Several times in the hot time of year I'd take a pressure washer to them before skinning and quartering. I almost always grind mine up with pork fat so maybe thats the trick to avoiding the smelly. Either way, if I skin one up and the meat stinks, he goes to the coyotes....no questions asked.

Leave them lay, pork is cheap......

LOL!!! I smell that same smell every time I cook breakfast sausage from just about any boar. The funny thing is I don't taste it though. But yes the smell is just horrible!

Right now I have about 30 pounds of sausage left from a big pregnant Sow I shot last year. The smell and taste is so incredibly mild I probably wont ever process another big boar in my life. The problem is a really big Sow is kind of hard to come by and I want to be able to justify spending the $110 on it to get it processed so its gotta be big.

I killed a large boar that had a really funky smell. Dumped it out in the north pasture under the power pole the vultures roosted.
A month later the vultures had not eaten the carcass and moved to a different pole.

Not eating it was the right decision.

i can normally tell when i walk up to a pig if i am going to clean it or not based on its smell. the best tasting pig i have eaten was a 100ish pound boar i shot this 4th of July in a wheat field, smelled sweet when i was cleaning him. if they stink the coyotes get them.

Gutless method. Use it and wear gloves to skin taking special care not to touch the meat. Then change gloves to butcher. Do this and even javelina is edible.

When I lived in Kingsville in the late 70s I killed 100 pound boar. I threw a good bbq pit away it stunk so bad.

Once..way back in the 60's a friend of mine talked me into going halves with him on a 200 lb. domestic hog that we could butcher. The owner said that the boar had been neutered 30 days prior to our purchase, and would be fine. I learned then, that it takes a lot longer than that to change the situation with a male hog. We made up sausage and all the normal cuts of meat and the first pan of sausage I tried cooking up in the kitchen made it evident really quick that something was wrong. You could smell it cooking through the whole house ! Domestic or feral makes little difference in the boars....either way they need to lose their jewels at an earlier age to make them edible. Maybe some guys can eat with one hand while pinching their nose with the other...but not me !

I have eaten a lot of hogs that I have killed. My favorite will always be around 200# boar.(If not stinky) Best meat, best layer of fat, they live a good life and the meat is great. Will not eat a sow over 100 lbs, discolored low fat if she has ever been pregnant.
Now I once killed an old Mule deer buck in Montana that stunk up the house so bad when cooked I would have to open the windows! It tasted fine, just a little tough.

I met a few at Country 2000

Was back up there yesterday. All that was left was skin, bones, and hooves. Couldn't even find the head.
