I'm looking to build a small cabin at our ranch in the next few months, and would love to see what y'all have done as inspiration. Post'em up!

Crumrw, if you do the work yourself, there's quite a few things to consider. Slab or pier and beam? Most likely the latter. Always use treated lumber for the box foundation. Screws instead of nails. You can get away with 2x6 floor joists, they work well. I tended to overbuild ours. 12" on center with 3/4" decking. Go ahead and use 'Pex' for your plumbing. I used 'Solar shield' OSB for walls and roofing. This thing stays cool in summer and warm in winter. Feel free to PM me. I've learned through trial and error. No need for you to have too. Good luck. Just curious, wheres your place?

How many do you want to sleep and what amenities do you want? Full kitchen and bathrooms? Tv room? Or just a place to sleep?

I'm thinking small...lofted 10x 16 with an 8x16 screened in porch, and the ability to add on in the future. I was planning a composting toilet with full shower and sink (will have water the week of Thanksgiving. Solar power at some point, generator in the meantime. It'll be on river bottom land (not flood plane), so I want to build it up off the ground a bit. I have PT 6x6 piers 4' above the ground with concrete piers poured 30" deep. Soil is clay.

The piers need to be deeper if above ground 4 feet. Or are you talking about wood above ground? Still thick concrete needs to be deeper. JMO
Concrete piers 24 in. diameter.

This is ours in Uvalde Co. It is 24'x16' and runs on a generator. No running water but I rigged up a rainwater catchment which is used for washing hands and dishes.

I like this. Simple but comfortable and effective. Very similar in size to my deer hunting cabin (16x20). It too uses rainwater with a well (it's a 1/4 mile from the cabin) with handpump for back up. Ours runs on solar and wind as opposed to a genny.

Sounds great. Saturated clay can be tricky so as already stated deeper and larger diameter with the concrete is good.

Thanks. My little pieces of heaven on earth. Plan to retire at the one with the fall colors.

Wood above ground. Concrete is more of a pad with large surface area to resist sinking/compaction in the clay. Wood above ground are braced 6x6's. I don't think for a cabin this size a deeper foundation is necessary. Heck, people put 10x16 cabins on deck blocks all the time. Thanks for the thoughts though. I'll take another look at my plan.

I missed this question but here is my small cabin low cost habitat. It's 12 by 36 incl the 4' porch. $8500.00 for Morgan structure and $5000.00 materials to complete around $13,000. All labor me, my wife, my son in law and 2 grandsons. Can sleep 10 incl 2 lofts. Completed over 2 years and quite proud of my last life project now at 70 and retired.
