A buddy of mine has a dream hunt scheduled in 2019 for an Alaskan Brown bear. He's taking a .375 H&H for the hunt. He's not a reloader & uses factory ammunition in all his rifles. For those experienced in hunting large dangerous game, what factory ammo & bullet weight would you recommend? This will be guided hunt spot & stalk for a good shot.

I would call the guide and ask his advice regarding ammo. Most guides I know have pretty strong preferences and would be happy to counsel a client.

The H&H does surprisingly well out to 250 with a 270 grain bullet. I used a Speer soft point which may not do well on bear. Partition comes to mind for that. If theres no chance of longer shots Id go 300 grain.

Absolutely. I would even think that the guide would have already given his recommendations.

If it were me, though, Id want A-frames. The heaviest Swift makes in that caliber.

My friend did talk with the outfitter. It was suggested that no caliber smaller than .375 be used. In fact, it was specifically mentioned they have had terrible results with the 338 and highly discourage it. There was no mention of type or weight of bullet for the .375 except that it was a good caliber choice. The guide said shot will be 100 yards or less. My buddy has two boxes of Barnes ttsx in 300 grain on hand. The hunt will be along the Alaskan Inner Passage near Sitka. Thoughts?

Any of the heavier premium bonded core bullets should work fine. I also believe that the Sierra gameking 300 grain bullet will also hold together under just about any circumstances despite not being a bonded core style bullet. I also wholeheartedly agree with a previous posters recommendation of the Swift A-frames. My personal opinion is that you should stay clear of mono metal type bullets.

Edit: Unless you just want to rebarrel the rifle stay away from the Hornady DG bullets.

I am shocked that he discouraged the .338. From the Win Mag and up its a pretty great round with the right bullet.

I'll bet Nosler ammo using the Partition bullet will make the guide happy.

Mine was with a 180gr out of a 300RUM. Literally didn't take a step so I'd say anything a 375 shoots will be fine so pick the one that shoots the best

I'm not a bear expert but I think a .30 or even 7mm could work, with certain loads. I doubt the load matters as much with a 375. Even the lighter .375 loads are a lot of gun.

Having never hunted the big bears, it wont mean a lot, but that bit about .338s not gettin it done throws up some red flags for me. Great, big, giant, bright red flags. Bears aint buffalo. The only two reasons a .338 would be ineffective on any bear, at the range mentioned, would be poor shooting or poor bullet selection. No .375 will fix that.

Why stay away from the Hornady? Due to the steel jacket?

Yes, the steel jacket. I had Doc's in Carrollton build a 458 Win Mag for me and the Hornadys of 15 to 18 or so years ago ruined the barrel in under 100 shots.

I haven't had any problems with them in my 375 ruger. I've probably ran 150 or so through it. I have read reports of the dgx failing by coming apart in dangerous game.
