Just as I was about to post this thread, I read 218 Bee's hog story and chuckled at the similarities. I took yesterday (Friday) off work and headed to the deer lease in northern Brown County. Friday evening, after a young 8-pt and some does visited the feeder, this black mass came walking up from behind the blind. First hog I've seen at our place, though this is just my second year there. Normally, I would have blasted him right away, but it was still early in the evening and I was hoping he'd pass through and I could resume deer hunting. Well, he lingered a little too long. Plus, I'd yet to get blood on my .25-06 despite owning it for several years. So I let him have it. One shot behind the head and he dropped like a sack of potatoes, though he did kick for a minute or two.

I let him lay there and figured I'd see if anything else came up. Sure enough, three does came toward the feeder. They didn't know what to make of this dead pig laying there. They were skittish, yet curious. They even started blowing and stomping nearby, I guess to see if it would react. Finally after dark I walked up to him. Like 218 Bee's experience, this pig was much larger than I realized. His head was massive. I tried to drag him but he wouldn't budge. Then I realized my mistake...shooting him near the feeder. So, I decided I'd come back after the morning hunt and drag him off.

After chaining him, I tried pulling him again myself but couldn't move him more than 6 inches or a foot at a time. I estimate he was 200+ lbs. Once I got him chained to the truck, I hauled him off into the woods for the coyotes and vultures.

Smelly bugger.

Well done, KB! Yep, gravity ain't your friend on those big devils...argues for holding fire until they're where you want 'em to fall. Of course, I had a friend who tried that approach and the boar wheeled and ran after the shot, collapsing right under his feeder anyway. The best laid plans...

Thanks! I actually bought that rifle because it had the most figure/tiger-striping I'd ever seen on a Remington 700. It turned out to be a pretty sweet little shooting rifle to boot!
