I purchased my place a little over 3 1/2 years ago and had pics of this buck from day one. In 2016 he was a solid 8 but not knowing what else was around that season I let him walk. Last season he got much bigger and grew a few extra points. I tried hard for him during the 2017 bow season and had one shot. He jumped the string on me and I clipped the top of his back. He went nocturnal the rest of the year. I hadn't seen him since last January. Fast forward to yesterday morning I went out to check cards and kill some time because I have Thursdays off. I had my son with me and had the rifle in the truck just in case. I pulled up to the front gate and could see a buck out in my pasture tending a doe. I glassed him and there he was, beat up and looking like an old prize fighter. We had been playing cat and mouse for a long time leading to this moment. We drove up to the cabin and snuck in and grabbed some rattling horns and snuck around to the back yard (my cabin has a 2 acre yard that we keep mowed). I rattled for 5 seconds and he came running in at a full sprint from the pasture! He jumped the fence and never stopped. I made the shot when he was only 20 yards away and closing. He is by no means my biggest deer ever but I felt a real connection with him and consider him to be a trophy. I plan to age him this weekend as best as I can by his teeth but he is undoubtedly old. Yesterday was kind of bittersweet. I lost a lot of sleep over this deer last year and to finally close that chapter unexpectedly left me feeling ecstatic and melancholy all at the same time if that makes any sense? He is likely to be the smallest mount in my cabin from this point forward but in my mind he earned his place on the walls there. And before anyone asks, he was 14 inches inside.

John

When you can hunt a special buck, it makes it that much better....What makes it so special, is you can tell that story to others over and over again while admiring the mount.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Great story and buck!

When he was young, I told Dale Jr. that hunting and racing are a lot alike. Holding that steering wheel and holding that rifle both mean you better be responsible.
