 Montague County Question

Just started hunting a piece of land in Sunset. I've never hunted Montague county so I don't really know what caliber of deer to expect out there. What is considered a good mature buck for this area? Thanks!

Anywhere from 110 to 150. Our biggest on cam this year is probably 140 but not seen in person. Last year had one about 150 and another non typical around 170+. Guy who took the 170 hadn't shot a buck in 8 years and bow hunted early arxhery season to get it. Both taken by neighbors. I have only killed two in 8 years and each about 120. Usually just take a doe for meat. Good deer are in small pockets there since cover is spread out. How many acres and is it oaks? Deer really have a lot of food to eat now.

It’s hard hunting - if you miss the rut. But I’ve harvested 2 130 class bucks the past 3 years. Both 10 points. I’ve seen bigger a youth lastbyr shot a 160 class buck with all kinds of points .

Peak rut is mid Nov right before Thanksgiving from what I see. So 11/16 to 11/20. The biggest we always see year after year show up on camera though after Thanksgiving to first week in Dec. We never see them but appears they are really searching at the end for a doe and can be any time of the day. They are very hard to pattern in my opinion they might never visit a feeder more than once.

I’ve bunted that general area my whole life.
It’s like anywhere else I guess.
There’s some good pockets of DNA and move on down the road and a 120 is a trophy.
I’d say if you’re in a better area, a 150 class deer is very possible.
Mature 5 yr old should weigh live, 200 lbs
Overall, it’s a good place to be

I used to hunt not far northwest of there, near the lake. Antlers generally weren't large, but bodies were big. Now I'm just outside Nocona. Much the same there. Took an old, grating 6 point last year that was about 110. Didn't get a live weight, but he field dressed to 140.

All of our bucks dress 130 to 150. Does 75 to 85. We are just SW of Nocona. I would say a mature trophy is about 1 per section since many area are open pasture. So usually 3 or 4 year olds are shot.

Thanks for the info. It's 213 acres with hay fields and a lot of oaks and pecans. Had cameras out for about a week and got a lot of pics of smaller younger deer.

Depends what part of sunset your are in. We kill bigger deer 140-160. Other places around the lbj your lucky to see a decent deer.

I’m just North of Sunset and have some real monster bucks. Of course, it’s just before the season starts and they are 100% nocturnal.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.
