I got up early Saturday morning and decided to walk to the meadow box and see if a nice buck I'd seen during dove season would show up. Got to the blind and it was full of wasps. Spent 30 minutes with the lighter, burning then smashing what seemed like an entire squadron of the suckers. So at daylight there were the usual couple of small bucks, the flock of turkeys, and some raccoons out and about. About 8:30 I see a large hog at the north end of the field under the feeder that's right at 165 yards away. I'm watching him, mulling over whether to whack him or not, then another hog comes out in the south end of the field at the hog feeder about 100 yards to the south. I'm sitting there like I'm watching a tennis match, back and forth and back and forth. About 9 they are still there, so I slide over and open the north window. Shoot the one in the north end, he drops straight down.

Look back to the south, and the other hog has run off about 10 steps- then he walks back in the mudhole and starts eating again. So i popped him and he went down.

Head back to the house to get a shower, then the Missus and I walk out towards the barn to take the dog to do his business. As we're walking back to the house, the dog looks into the barn and barks. We stopped, turned back and headed towards the barn and a coyote came barreling out of the barn. He heads across the yard, our little dog right behind him, both of us hollering for him to stop but he had other ideas. He gets out about 100 yards then finally quits when he had a blowout on a grass spur. The coyote is out in the drive, looking, and I sprint to the house, grab the rifle and head out the fromt door. Run down to the fence, get a rest on a t-post, and put this mangy-looking thing out of his misery.

For the afternoon hunt I left the 243 and took the 280AI and went to the back side and got up in the box. Thankfully there were only a few wasps that needed dispatching, and I got settled in. Right before dark I was watching a bunch of does/fawns and a nice young 8 when a oreo-looking hog came out at the west end feeder, about 160 yards away. I watched him for a while, then as it was almost getting dark, let one fly at him. I though about getting him caped out and then shoulder mounted, but realized the Missus would undoubtedly exercise her right to veto wherever I chose to hang him up.

Lots of deer seen, lots of little bucks checking does, but no big ones yet.

Had more fun than a barrel of deer. Better than being stuck in the MUD.
