I couldn't be happier with the start of this season as I shot my first set of antlers!

Saw him last night literally at the very end of the legal day. Had my Thermal-RFB with me, but wanted to do it right... Before sun-up I saw a huge boar with my thermal monocular dining on a some corn I had spread at the back of my arena away from the feeders. Knowing he would be there a while, I figured I'd give it 30 minutes or so before using him as target practice/zero check for my .06 Remy 700 deer rifle. Take another look a 15 minutes later with the mono and I can see a buck out there with him now @ 150 yds. Few more minutes tick off and just enough light for the Leupold to see... and it's my friend from last night again!

Sight him up and on cue the adrenaline flows and I am shaking. Fortunately he was butt-first so I had to wait for him turn which seems like it took forever, but did allow me to settle down just a little. Broadside turn finally comes and I let the 150 grain Bonded Scirocco fly... He immediately is gone, while a doe and small buck in my feed pen are still there looking around. I took that as a small sign I hit him. While waiting for him to lay down and some of my lease buds to come help, I broke out the fishing pole to go fish in a tank opposite of where he was. Caught 5 little ones and then hooked this 4-5 pounder. I'm thinking this is a good sign!


Put the fishing pole up, grab the RFB and walk over to where the shot took place and find a little bit of blood and few pieces of tissue. Buds show up, we follow a trail and find him laid down behind a cedar. Shot was about 2in. high and 2in. back of perfect, but the bullet did its job with an almost imperceptible entry and aggressive exit.


I couldn't be happier with my first set of antlers. A little extra special as I was able to do it with my father's (died a couple years ago) rifle. I can now turn my full attention back to Porky and friends.
