My guess, changes every year dependent on the weather and the rut. But TP&W said that last season the average hunter took 11 days before killing a deer. But then in Texas you could kill a doe every single day in west Texas and maybe never see one in east Texas, so I will just throw a number out there and say 20% of all deer are killed opening weekend without any information to back my up.

I should have given a number instead of percentage
Last year a little over 900,000 deer killed in Texas
so 20% would be 180,000
That's a bigger number than I thought, but I'm sticking with it.

Lot of places are still going to wet and really green. Deer movement will be off in many areas due to it. Will still be some deer killed in areas that the rut has started and guys looking for some meat for the freezer. Numbers will probably be down from opening days in the past though.

I agree with that statement. Wonder if total numbers will be down also for the year because of it. I know a lot of hunters that only hunt a few weekends a year. Opening weekend being one of them.

With the acorn crop I have this year and the amount of new growth green weeds/browse in my area, I would bet numbers will be down this year in my area. To many will be hunting feeders only. I am going to sit where I can see lots of area to see what and how they are moving. If something I like wants to commit suicide, I will oblige. grin

STX - They won't be suicidal in our area till usually a week or two after Thanksgiving. One might make a mistake though.

Actually there was a flurry of new bucks moving around from Oct 6th till Oct. 25th. The much cooler and wet weather had those bucks roaming still in bachelor groups. We get similar weather in early Nov and I bet they will move again, maybe not in groups though. Just takes the right one to show up when someone is hunting. But, I do agree that in most years about Dec. 10 is when they really start to move better in northern Live Oak.

Agree Ranch, with right conditions and weather, cool to cold Nov. temps, I've seen the rut as early as Thanksgiving week in far South Texas or as late as Christmas week to start up.
