I’ve got an 11 month old GSP that is going great. Took her to Kansas a couple of weeks ago and she made me very proud. I’m looking at getting a fair amount flighty quail to do some additional training and have a question that I fear is dumb. When I release the birds and make them dizzy/lethargic, if I put a orange flag in the ground close by so I can remember where I’ve got them stashed, will the dog begin to associate the flag with the quail? I obviously wouldn’t put it directly next to the released birds but I was thinking within about 10-15 yards or so. I’d be putting out about 30 birds so I’d like to know where I have them so I can set her up for success.

One other thing: Do you normally put them out 1 at a time or a few in the same spot to create at makeshift covey?

Good question, but I don’t have an answer for you.

A smart pup on a morning when the birds are still in the shinnery mots will soon be going from one mot to another, even easier for them to associate the orange flag with a bird. For sure not every pup will put it together fast but the bright ones will (and those are the ones we want). up

I've used toilet paper. I try to remember the bushes. Don't worry about it too much. They learn the difference in the field.

If you have to take them to the flag they are not hunting. Surly you can remember within 20 yards of where you planted a bird and I assume you know enough to hunt him into the wind.

I plan to put out 25-30 at a time over 30-40 acres. Won’t be easy to remember where all the birds are.

They put out 5 in NSTRA for two dogs in 30 minute braces. It's not unusual for the field to get cleaned.

In my opinion that's too many. Your giving the dog too many opportunities to mess up, main concern would be poor fliers and catching birds. 2 to 3 well handled finds, a couple times a week is plenty.

One of the best ways to groom a field if you don't have stick ups is to shread lanes. Do figure eights and you will leave clumps. I think knowing where the birds are is a big advantage. The pups will trust you when you work them into the birds.

Pen raised quail are a disaster with young dogs. Use fresh caught pigeons and a remote launcher

I disagree. Lazy trainers are the disaster. Do your whoa breaking before you put them on pen raised quail.

This is Cracker on pen raised quail after a couple dozen flushes.

Either have help or leave your gun at home.

Notice dog is whoa broke and most likely been on check cord for numerous encounters
Very misleading
Bill is a good trainer and is so right about lazy trainers
