Vet says looks like it's torn but we did not xray. He put her on NSAIDs for a month. It's been two months and she has greatly improved. She no longer carries her leg and she walks and can trot.

We talked about surgery but she's 10 years old and surgery is always dicey anyway.

Her days of hunting Mr. Bob look to be over but I've been doing some internet searches lately and there's some indication that she may fully recover.

Hunting birds is ALL she's ever cared about.

Have you had experience with a dog's torn ACL?
Let me know what happened.

thanks THF.

I've had one that blew her ACL and had TPLO surgery. After a 12 week rehab she was running and that Oct hunted with about as much athleticism as before. She unfortunately blew the other one 5 months later which is a real possibility. But my girl was 7 not 10. Feel real bad for you both.

I guess getting old sucks for man or beast.
My heart is breaking for her.

Reel,

Dogs will lay down scar tissue around the joint, called medial buttress, to help stabilize the joint. She will likely develop arthritis at an advanced rate in the leg. However, if she seems pain free, I'd probably let her hunt. NSAIDs will be her friend. Maybe shorter hunts or friendlier terrain.

With my lab, she developed arthritis in her elbow and was on NSAIDs for years. I hunted even after it started giving her a little trouble. She loved to go so much she would wake my wife whining if she heard me loading decoys in the morning.

Just keep an eye on her. You know your dog, if you feel like she's up to it, take her out. I would just recommend keeping a close eye on her and not letting her over do it.

Thanks, doc.
She seems to be improving. Maybe I can give her some field time.
She loves it so much that it would hurt to leave her behind.

My lab mix tore his CCL at 7. We got it fixed, and he hunted 3 more seasons. But he was noticeably slower, and the hunts could not be as long or as difficult as prior. He got arthritis bad at the end. He needed more help getting in/out of boats and truck, getting up steep banks, and just patience on the retrieves. His endurance didn't change, just speed. He lived for the hunt as well, and personally i'd rather have a short/worse hunt with him along and see him smile after a retrieve than have a great hunt without him. But at some point you have to know if you're doing it for you or for them.

I don't know how not getting it fixed will affect her ability or agility, but my recommendation is just don't overdo it and watch her. Even though she lives for hunting, it may be doing her more harm than good if its too much. Glucose tabs, pain meds, and rest afterwards will be her friend, imo.

We did TPLO when my lab was five. Vet said it was probably a small tear at first. Gave us pain meds and something for the swelling. He got to feeling better in no time, but then he was feeling so good that he started tearing azz around the yard and tore it when he cut too hard. There was no doubt it was torn after that.

TPLO was recommended. It was expensive and the recovery/rehab sucks. I’m afraid he will tear his other knee, even though we did the rehab to a T. There is a 40-60% chance they tear the second one and I don’t want that to happen. He isn’t a hunting dog, but it’s hell trying to get him to stop playing fetch.

Know your dog and do the rehab.

My dog tore his at 10.5 years old, had TPLO surgery in May and he just passed his 5th Master National (will be 11 this month). You'd never know it had happen.
