has anyone heard of or used the spray that is suppose to kill the little bugs that eat on animal mounts? African mounts are especially attractive to them

Taxi should be able to answer that. I just use the aerosol bug bombs in my house 2 times per year and so far it has helped.

I dunno if it is smart, but every year or two I very lightly spray my turkey mount with raid. Haven't noticed any ill effects or any bugs getting after it.

I read an article years ago that recommended that, but thinking back I dont know how authoritative the article was... Seems like it was in Field and Stream or something like that.

Definitely curious to hear what anyone else does!

From what a friend told me moths and carpet beetles are the biggest culprits. He uses foggers about every 3 months to keep them at bay.

PM hufftax on here. I think it has to have Permethrin. I think I've used the stuff you spray on your clothes before a trip on my mounts when I was a little worried. So far no problems, but I did have a weird impala mount that I took back to Woodbury's (in Kerrville) and they said that there wasn't any problem.

I use foggers as well but all my mounts are in my office so it’s pretty easy to nuke that room a couple times a yr

I use foggers, too. Good taxidermist should have access to someone who treats the mounts for you. About $200-$250/animal depending on size. If you have beetles this is what you need to do. Foggers work well for the moths.

$250 an animal? Why can't you put it in a trash bag with some insecticide? Glad mine don't have this issue.

mine are not moths but the beetles - I put them in sealed bags with an insect strip around a year ago but they are back -

GZ, I'm pretty sure that's what the pros use. Don't know dilution rate. I've used it in the yard to get rid of everything. Only thing I've found that will wipe raspberry ants out with one application. Just don't expose pets to it until dry+30. Bombs have worked well for my trophy room because they're all Texas animals. If you have African game, odds are you have (or will) bugs. Also depends on your taxi, how much African game they handle, and their practices.

I have never noticed any bugs on my mounts (all whitetail deer). Is this something that I should be treating for/looking for on a regular basis? Or are all of you that are talking about it having it with african game?

Keep an eye out for hair falling out of the mounts or small bald spots. If you see that you need to bomb the room the mounts are in with a bug bomb.

they mostly get on african game - eat into the base of the horns and hair - usually there will be a fine powder on the floor under the mount. The EPA stopped the folks who tan the hides from using formaldehyde which made them susceptible to bugs. That is what I read

I think dust mites can cause problems too so id just try to keep the dust under control and look for bald spots on the mounts. I have never seen any but I still bug bomb for preventative measures.

Many years ago I worked as a taxidermist, and we would use Sevin insecticide powder on mounts. We would don rubber gloves and put a bandana covering our nose and mouth, and lightly dust the mounts with the powder, working it in with a brush very carefully not to break and hair on the mounts. Then we would wipe down the mounts with a slightly damp cloth to remove the dust from the outer hair. The dust would remain in the inner hair for years probably and no bugs would bother the mount again. The Sevin is a powerful insecticide so be careful if you try to use this method. I would guess it is not recommended by the manufacturer, but it does work.

I had a moth infestation in my office brought in by a turkey wing.

Bought the expensive mount saver but the raid bombs ( about 6 total in a 12x13 room) eventually did them in

For what it’s worth I can’t tell that they did Any real damage to my mounts but I caught it early.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Fly spray for horses. Permethrin based. Spray it on and wipe it in with a cotton cloth. Takes the dust off too.

I bought a liter of the stuff that was recommended, set me back $30-40 and is enough to do 20-30 mounts easily. It’s at the ranch or I’d post what it is
