I'm not playing this time cuz you trying to make me look stupid again. These type of threads just show how difficult it is to age/score a deer from a photo or two. What see in a photo is much different than when you see it live due to regional variances in deer. Nothing trumps history on a deer either when guessing.

He's an old man with a lot of grey in the face. 18-19 inside and his antlers have started the other direction within the last year or two.

His neck says old, his body days older. Knobby knees, thick folds of skin in the shoulders. Nice Romanized face. This guy has been through it.
Age: 7.5 IS: 20.5 score: no idea but he has mass so I would say he is pushing 155-160??

A lot easier on the age, that’s 8.5 year old may be 7,5 but I’m betting older due to feed program
18.5 wide. 102.5 down 57 up 159.5

I'll play...
7.5 20.5" inside Mid-upper 160s
Mass makes all measurements bigger than they appear...

That buck to me is 7.5. Inside spread 18.5-19 and guessing with the mass around 162.5 inches.
Great pics STX. Cool buck.

I think this buck is 8.5, 20.5 inside and going to push real close to 170. Lots of mass, and some deceptive length. Age and size of body make antlers appear less than they'll actually measure.
There....that's my uninformed two cents worth.

My guesses when I saw him that afternoon was he was a 7 yr old buck when I watched him walk in and thought maybe 6 a time or two due to the neck. Rest of him was 7 or more. As far as score and width I tend to over score when I am judging bucks to see how close to the cut-line they are. If they get close to it then I get more opinions on the buck before shooting one. I scored him high the first time and had 25" MB, 40" of mass and 20" IS or 110". I gave him 68" of tine length on my first guess. So that put him at 178" to close to a non-shooter for his age. He looked really heavy horned and I thought he might have 42" of mass after judging just his right side. His right side is really stronger than his left. When I had a little more time to study him more I guessed him to be 24"MB, 40" mass and 20" IS or 108" and then I gave him 63" of tines for a 171" gross score guess. I showed photos to get verification on my guesses and they agreed with age of 6 or 7 but more 7 also. Score guess was 172 for them. I will post photos of him later after I shot him and then the mount for comparison.

On this ranch, what is the criteria for shoot vs no-shoot? esp in a mature deer like that?

On this ranch, what is the criteria for shoot vs no-shoot? esp in a mature deer like that? Last year a 4 yr old had to be a solid 170 or more and any buck over 5 yr old or older had to be 180 or more gross. That is why I over score to see how close a buck is there. I don't want to be "that guy" who shoots one over the cutline. This year a 4 yr old has to be 170 or more and 5 yr or older has to be 175+. If it is an older buck they can recognize that has gone downhill and do not want him shot then they will tell you about or show TC pics of those bucks. They had one buck killed this year that was judge to be upper 160's by everyone who saw the video of him but he scored just at or little over 180 when he had more base pts than they had seen. His mass hid some tine length also.

Based on the pics you have shown, sounds like their management plan has been working really well for them!
Just out of curiosity, how big is this ranch and I believe you said it is protein fed year round?

Just out of curiosity, how big is this ranch and I believe you said it is protein fed year round? I don't give specifics on any place I hunt or take photos at for obvious reasons. Yes they feed year round and have for the last 20 years. They have had a very sound management plan in place for the last 15 yrs now.

6.5 and 162 wasn't such a horrible guess.

Very interesting. I had a feeling the mass and body would throw me low. Looking forward to seeing him mounted.
