So I finally just got the call that I’m able to pick up my first suppressor, it’s an Omega 300. One of the rifles I want to use it on is a Browning Abolt .270. What’s going to be the best way to make it compatible with that suppressor? Will I be able to get a gunsmith to chop the barrel and just thread the 5/8 x24 or would it need one a muzzle brake?

5/8x24 or 1/2x28. Just change the end cap. That will probably be 1/2-28 just have to see how thick the barrel is.

Have the barel threaded 1/2-28 then use an adapter to step up to 5/8-24

One of the great things about the Omega is that it has interchangeable mounts. They come with a 5/8 X 24 direct thread mount and an ASR mount (quick detach mount that threads over ASR muzzle devices). It should have also come with a 5/8 X 24 ASR muzzle break.

First, you need to decide if you want to go direct thread or QD. That is a personal preference kind of thing. Most people seem to go with direct thread for bolt actions, but you can go either way. Direct thread and QD both have their pluses and minuses.

Assuming the rifle will be threaded 1/2 X 28, the next step would be to buy either the 1/2 X 28 direct thread mount for the Omega (if you choose to direct thread), or a 1/2 X 28 ASR muzzle device (if you choose to go with QD).

IMO buying one of the Omega devices that allows you to go straight 1/2 X 28 is going to be much better than going with a 1/2 to 5/8 adapter like SapperTitan mentioned. As I mentioned, the variety of mounting options is one of the great things about the Omega, no need for an unnecessary adapter on the end if your barrel.

Here is a link to the Omega direct thread mounts: SilencerCo Omega Mount

Ok 1/2 x28 with that Omega Direct thread mount looks like the way to go. Thanks for that link TTUHunter4 I hadn’t heard of those before. Does anyone see a problem with cutting that barrel down to 16.5? I know it will lose a little velocity but that gun is used for 100-175 yard shots and from I’m seeing that should be ok?

i wouldn't cut a 270 or any long action cartridge shorter than about 20". Lots of powder to burn and not enough barrel to do it at 16".
Think of selling he 270 and getting a short action of some flavor for the suppressor host (308, 708, 260, 6.5 CM, etc.) if you want a shorter barrel set up.

I have a .308 with a 20in barrel as well that came threaded I plan on using, just was wanting to use this one as well. So cutting the .270 to 20in would be ok? Or would you recommend not cutting it at all?

I wouldn't cut the 270 barrel down at all. It'll be more expensive than you think. not to mention it might not shoot as well as it did before. With the suppressor and muzzle break on the .308 you'd be surprised at how much of the recoil has been reduced.

Go ahead and cut it, you wont like a long barrel with an Omega on it. Yes it will lose speed but you will likely be fine for 90% of Texas kill shots. It will still be way faster than a 6.8 either way. Send it to Morgan and it will be done quick for a far from expensive price.

This is what I've been told by a gunsmith for me 300wm that badly needs a muzzle break.

I had a Rem 700 7mm mag cut and threaded. Shoots great with the Harvester 300 on it. It is really long with the suppressor. I had him do 5/8-24 on it. There was barely enough metal to do it.

I see you are in Round Rock
I know that BlackJack Gunsmith does good threading jobs, the guys at the Silencer Shop use him.. one of my buddies there has threaded 1/2 x 28 on Sporter barrels and used a adapter to go to 5/8 x 24 for a 30 Cal can.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Blackjack and Capitol City Trap and Skeet also reccomends them, I’ll end up giving them a shout.

I've used Blackjack for a couple small repairs and have beeen pleased. He's who suggested the adapter to me. Instead of an adapter, using a right sized thread mount sounds ideal. If you use him, post up how his work is and what he charged.

Another idea would be to bore out a 22 Cal mount to accept 30 Cal bullets..

I know that Griffin did their minimalist brake that way for a guy at the shop.

No need to do this. SilencerCo already makes a 30 caliber 1/2 X 28 ASR muzzle brake that the Omega with ASR mount will thread over if the OP decides he wants to go with the QD mount and a muzzle device instead of direct thread. This brake will work perfectly for his .270 if he gets it threaded 1/2 X 28 with no modifications or adapter needed.

No offense to the guys posting in this thread....but the OP specifically asked about options for the SilencerCo Omega. If you aren’t familiar with that particular suppressor it is probably better to refrain from posting. There have been a few posts so far with bad advice and/or irrelevant information.

_Lee - If you do end up getting your .270 threaded 1/2 X 28 just get the 1/2 X 28 direct thread mount SilencerCo sells for the Omega if you decide to go direct thread, or the 1/2 X 28 30 cal ASR muzzle brake if you want to go with quick detach. The Omega already comes with the ASR mount to work with that brake. With either of these options there is no need for any adapters on your barrel or for any modifications to be made. If you are able to thread the barrel 5/8 X 24 things are even easier. In that case, everything you need for either direct thread or QD came in the box with your Omega.

Yeah I’m going to take it by Blackjack so he can look at it and decide whether he can preferably do the 5/8x24 and if not do the 1/2x28.
