Found a dead BB Antelope a few days ago and yesterday a dead WT Doe. Neither killed just died. And neither looked to be in bad shape.

Maybe they felt bad for you and decided they would save you some time and two rounds?

Deer die of old age and health issues. An avid hunter I know who has bred some deer had his breeder buck die recently, and it was 9.5 years old. It happens.

Lighting, sometimes old age, a variety of illnesses, shock due to exhaustion or exposure, etc. can all result in quick deaths of seemingly healthy animals. I would not worry about 2. You start finding more and you might want to worry.

Do y'all have anthrax in your soils there, don k? After this drought and then the huge rains, that could be a possibility.

My first thought was also anthrax.

Way too cold for anthrax. Probably too cold for ehd. Not sure if antelope are susceptible to acidosis but if they got to a lot of corn or you have a bumper acorn crop they could have died from that. I had at least 3 bucks die from it last fall with all the acorns we had.

No corn, not many acorns. BB looked to be about a 2 year old male. WT Doe looked to be in good shape. Probably like Goats and Sheep. Just looking for a place to die.

It is amazing. I went by the Doe yesterday afternoon and she is completely cleaned up except for hide and bones. Never even got time to start stinking. Buzzards are migrating and never seen so many and they must be hungry.

I’m sure Don, with all his experience, has never considered that animals can die of old age or illness. What enlightening insight lol

After all the recent rains it seems there’s a lot of pneumonia going around. I lost two healthy does since this post and ranchers all around here have been seeing mortality like this.

Hey Don, my son had 2 doe that were perfectly healthy die, he contributes it to the 50 degree over night temperature change and the wet weather, drastic changes can be hard on all animals.

Believe that shows up in time of drought in certain grasses.

Could very well be the weather. Very strange for this or any time of year. I guess we are just lucky it isn't any colder than it is. If it does this in Jan. or Feb. it could really get bad.

Pneumonia and acorns are top of the list now if I find anything dead. Large temperature swings from hot one day to cold/damp the next can cause pneumonia younger animals. I have a ton of acorns and still expecting to find the first younger deer dead.

We did not have very many acorns this year. Those we did have dropped about a month ago. There are still a few on the Spanish Oaks but not really that many.

We didn’t either Don. I’m glad. I lost 3 bucks last year to acorns and it was harder hunting because deer just flat out quit coming to corn. All season.

Shinoaks are about the only trees that produced this year.
