I need to reach out to fellow hunters/farmers to ask for your expertise on getting rid of
grass burrs around our hunting cabin, etc. We have sandy soil and get a lot of grass burrs
so last spring we started spraying pre-emergence but we still had several of those nasty
things come up. I heard there was a chemical you could spray on them directly now that would kill
them but not the other grasses. Does anybody have the name of a chemical spray that can help us?

Many thanks

Following. We have them at the gate and camp, really don’t see them anywhere else. I’d love to get rid of those little bastards

I have never heard of a selective herbacide, generally the pre-emergent and hand removal are recommended, that and building the soil so other plants crows them out.

Been battling them since I helped a neighbor and tilled their garden, must have brought them in on my tractor wheels, I spend hrs pulling the damn things and seem to be able to keep them in check somewhat, but deer and other critters seem to transport them around.

Google MSMA. That's what we use to use before EPA or whatever outlawed it. I believe you can still get it out of Canada.

We don't have the grass burrs, but did have the goat head stickers, took about 3 years but a good cotton hoe handled that problem around the cabin. The grass burs will be harder to get rid of, every time you come in from a hunt you are probably reseeding the area with a few strays.

MSMA will get them. It's restricted though. I personally like it better than 2,4-d for them.

Might be 2-3 years to really knock them back - the seeds can survive dormant in the soil for many years.

What I don't get with the MSMA I pull by hand. Trick is to spray them BEFORE they go to seed (what makes the burrs).

Fertilize the hell out of the area. Grass burrs live in the poorest soil, improve the soil and they go away. Works in your yard at home to.

My dad has about a 1/4 acre of his hay field that has them really bad. He has been trying to get rid of them for years. the only thing that he has been able to do is shrink the area that is infested with them. I'll ask him what he uses.

This! It really does work. I had them bad in the sandy soil here on the island. I used a cheap, high nitrogen lawn fertilizer at twice the normal application. Those suckers died out and never came back! The next door neighbor still is eat up with them.

MSMA can be found as Target 6. It is a selective grassy weed killer. 2,4-d is a broadleaf herbicide and will not do the job on grassy weeds. It's good for other types of weeds though.

This.^^^

Nothing is cost effective at our place. Very sandy soil that is covered in sand burrs. As soon as the sand gets disturbed, the demons explode!

I found a small patch in the yard. Luckily not enough to be a problem. Pulled them by hand. We dont have any sand
