The lunar charts show a new moon happening during the first week of the General Season. The general theory behind the moon’s impact on the feeding times for fish and wild game is that it hits a peak whenever the moon is directly overhead and underfoot (direct opposite side of the globe). It’s a common belief that hunting during the middle of the day during a full moon is a good idea which coincides with the moon being directly underfoot. However, it’s also true that a new moon is always directly overhead around noon.

With a new moon being less obvious, it would seem likely that hunters overlook mid-day hunting being good during this time.

Nothing is more discouraging to me than looking up and seeing a full moon, the night before a hunt. I'll usually throw another log on the fire, mix another cocktail and sleep in till about 0900. Then I creep in and hunt midday.

I think things like the rut, acorns, and corn feeders influence deer more than moon phases.
I have paid attention to the solunar charts and have killed great deer in all phases.
I definitely would not use them as be all and end all for whitetail hunting.

Makes sense. But then I hunt all day anyway.

I have a little issue with this in that with so little light over night, deer will feed at first light. I agree with the full moon in that they are up eating between 12-6 that you won't see as much movement until around noon. I go to the stand later in the morning on those days and will see more deer between 11-3pm.

No, actually you would hunt them the opposite. As has been said, darker nights translate to earlier movement to feed.

Not that any of it much matters to me as I hunt all or most of the day anyway - especially during the rut when all bets are off and all predictions based on this or that theory are worthless.

A daytime moon is best, new or full. I much prefer hunting a dark moon for daytime activity. During the rut all bets are off. When hunting a bright nighttime moon, getting closer to the bedding area of the deer you are hunting will increase your odds, unless you blow them out.

Call it b.s. or whatever, doesn't matter....but a new moon seems to give me good activity at dawn and dusk and a full moon seems to make for a better mid-day hunt
