okay so ive got a marlin 30-30 as my truck gun, does everything i need it for and has put down lots of critters. i have always wanted a 45-70 for close range hogs or if i ever make it out west hunting. i want to know what the hunting forum thinks and maybe some motivation to just go get the dang thing, i dont want it to cause me to put the 30-30 up and barely use it though...

Ammo will cost you about $5 more per box of 20. But go buy, I did, but not once, I have 2 of them. LOL

I’ve never shot a 45-70. The 30-30 I carry everywhere does what I need it to. Gibson’s in Weatherford has a brand new looking Henry 45-70 at the used gun counter for $600. I almost bought it this week but didn’t think it would add anything to what I already have.

I love my Marlin 1895, accuracy is excellent. If you're a hand-loader you can get a lot more out of it.

I love my 30-30, but still want a 45-70.

A friend has a Marlin 45-70 that I have played with on several occasions.

It is solid to at least 100 yards. That's about as far as my aging eyes can get to with iron sights.

I'll get one some day, but I keep passing it over with other goofy builds that I just can't say no to.

It's kinda like a 1911, everyone should have at least one. LOL

I have had a few, but always ended up getting rid of them. For Texas a 3030 is as good or better. And for elk etc, up north i would rather have the extended range of a 3006. But if you want one, get it

My 30-30 did everything that I needed it to do too. I got a deal from a buddy on a Marlin 45-70 guide gun. I sold the 30-30 and still have the guide gun. As was said earlier, if you reload, you can get a LOT from the 45-70. Also, it is dirt cheap to load for it.

I have a JM stamped guide gun in 45/70. I think the QA/QC is decent on the newer remlins but if buying used I would look for an older JM stamped Marlin.

I had to have a 45-70, I get that way sometimes, after popping a handful of hogs with it I traded it for an AR. They are cool and have that old time feel, ammo was pricey and performance was not what I expected on hogs but They are fun to have. I made predator calls from the empty casings, If you pop out the primer, then go to the dollar store and buy those squeaky toys, pull the squeaker out, the center of that squeaker will fit right in the hole. Simple fun predator call.

It’s a cool caliber, but a “niche” one - best for closer range thumping of tougher critters.

Just about perfect for closer-in hog hunting. Not sure what type of “out west” hunting you have in mind, but outside of bison and bears at moderate ranges there are a lot better options for most other western hunting.

Take a close look at the Browning BLR Lightweight with pistol grip. Calibers from .223 to 300 Win Mag and all in between like 7mm08 etc.....A little more cash but they list in the catalog for 1069.00. Great looking lever action IMO.

I like the motivation im getting out of this, that's the main reason I posted on here. as for hunting out west I wasn't talking for primary hunting rifle but for a backup. I have a .270 for extended range, even though it would be awesome to kill an elk with an open sight lever gun!

Get a Rossi/Puma 454 casull if you can find one. Great rifle out past 100 yds. Deadly on hogs and recoil is not bad in the rifle.

If I were paying that kind of money it would be for a current production Winchester 1886. They are beautiful rifles.

I suffer the same struggle and have for a long time. But my rifle is a 375 winchester. I bought the 375 on impuse maybe 30 years ago while shopping for a 45/70. Now I could sell just my 375 brass hoard alone for more than the cost of a real nice 45/70 lever gun. Oh what to do?

I have 2 30-30's and one 45-70. Before you make the big step, try the 45-70 and see how you like the recoil. Just sayin.

I just picked up a 1969 Winchester Gold Commemorative Teddy Roosevelt 30-30 with octagon barrel that is like new condition. I told my wife it was for her. Really not sure if I should shoot it, I am not the kind to stash it away, don't have kids to hand it down to.
