Just moved to Conroe the beginning of this year, but been in Texas the past 3 years. Finally to a point where I'm looking for a deer lease to join where I can get away on weekends and spend my time hunting. Originally from north LA so somewhat new to this area and looking to meet some good people as well.

Not necessarily looking to start on a lease this late in the year as I have no stands or feeders ready but willing too. I am looking to join next year or possibly get on a waiting list at least.

If you find something and are needing another spot to fill, let me know I'm just down the road.

I haven't looked yet. But I just moved to the area as well. I figured I would start looking at the end of the season. But I would love to find a place sooner.

You live in Conroe and you're not going to hunt the SHNF?

I live in the woodlands. I haven't tried out SHNF but I do want to. I'm just leary about hunting around a lot of people I don't know.

I don’t think Binary was talking to you.

But hunting the national forest would be all of y’alls best bet this year, or pay for a guided hunt.

I got that. It's just an open forum ya know?

I got two draw hunts this year in Texas over the next couple of weeks. But, I have a little girl due early December. Promised my wife I wouldn't hunt after Thanksgiving. I was traveling for work and missed the first one. She's not taking any chances of me missing the birth of the second. I was planning on giving it a shot this year but turns out I don't have any time.

There are a lot of great weekend hunts available this year very reasonably priced if you're interested. I'm a booking agent for outfitters all over the world but I do have a lot of connections locally (I live in Spring). I don't book much locally...just willing to help if you want some referrals. No dog in the fight, as I said. I like to refer the good outfitters when I'm able. Let me know if you need more info. Check out the land/lease section. That's where all the leases are offered up. You can generally get on a good one as late as September if you monitor it closely and have your money ready. -Rick

Yeah I don't think you should worry about that too much. 162,000 acres is ALOT of acreage. And there's not as many hunters in Texas as one might think and only a small percentage of them are hunting public lands (just look at the low numbers on the draw applications - most only have a few hundred applicants and I don't think I saw one that had more than 5k applicants … and that is for the whole state). I think it will be like public land in every other state - once you track a mile+ in, you aren't likely to see anyone (and that is what some of the people here in the forums who are vets at hunting TX public lands have said)

Ya, I just haven't been out there to really scout and check it out. You got me really thinking about going to spend the day out there next weekend. Maybe bring my crossbow just in case.

What all is required to hunt SHNF?

Forgive me as I’ve never hunted public land before. I’ve always been on a lease in Louisiana but am getting tired of making the 4.5 drive every weekend.

All you need is the Public land permit, can be bought at Academy or online (think it's $45?), plus blaze orange hat and vest.
