Started the feeder back up on my little place, since my son-in-law SAYS he'll sit with me and my 6 year old grandson right before Thanksgiving. I adore the kid, but would prefer to have the immediate next of kin/voice of authority keeping him semi-still, plus my son-in-law hasn't hunted very much. We are probably selling the place, so I'd like to have them with me at least once before I start looking for "greener pastures". Anywho, here's a couple of pictures of an axis, starting the 4th day after I filled it (after being empty for a year+). In the second picture he looks old and pooped out. What say the THF? I hope he becomes a feeder regular so I can take him on my own terms, but, for me at least, axis have been impossible to pattern, no matter what age. (I know, I need to get the tractor in there and shred some shooting lanes through the grass. As you all know, I am layZEE.)

Looks like he foundered, hooves look 8” long That is a good catch Bobo, based on the condition of those hooves alone, that is probably one old animal. An exception, would be if the dirt is exceptionally soft enough, that the natural wearing down of the hooves can not occur, as they do on harder surfaces. I have seen an instance or two where middle aged animals will founder, but it occurs mostly on the older ones. So, hazarding a guess, the animal is probably old.

We had an axis buck that had been wounded by a hunter that missed his mark. We called the buck Tripod because he walked with a limp. We spent several years trying to find him, he was only on camera. When he was finally killed he had long hooves (foundering) possibly because he couldn't walk correctly, and very diminished antlers. So injury is a possibility.

I have seen a lot of WT foundered and a few Mule Deer. Most whitetails I have seen where in Valverde County and they lived on corn feeders in a drought. All ages were foundered that ate a large percentage of their diet as corn. That is a rocky a terrain as one can find. I have seen WT in Kendall County also that had foundered. Here is a 4 yr old mule deer buck killed in Pecos County that was starting to founder. No feeders on this ranch at all. I should have taken a photo of the top of his hooves as it was very noticeable.

That’s what I was thinking too stx.... More to do with diet than terrain. Had a horse try to founder on me, changed his diet and fixed the issues.
He had pushed over a feeder and eaten as much corn as he could handle on 2 occasions. Stopped him from getting into the feeder and put him on straight hay for a while and he was fine.
