I don't put a round in the chamber until I am all settled in my stand (chair set right, back pack unloaded, binoculars, range finders and thermal imagers handy) and relaxed. Then unloading the gun is the first thing I do before I start packing all that crap back up! I've knocked over my rifle too many time to have it loaded.
God bless John Wayne!

I load and unload in the stand, never go in or out with a loaded gun. Was part of an accidental discharge many years ago, luckily no one was hurt. Really learned a lesson that day and it wasn't even my gun.

I load and unload in the stand, never go in or out with a loaded gun. Me too. And, if I'm guiding, I ask my hunters to wait for me to get in the stand before loading their rifle. If I'm being guided, I never load my gun until my guide tells me to load it.

I was taught to load in the stand and unload before exiting. Many times i will chamber a round for the walk to the blind if its light, but i unload before climbing.

I usually load the gun for the walk in/out but I keep all of the rounds under the bolt and nothing in the chamber. Never know when or why you may need a quick shot. Once settled at the blind I bolt one into the chamber.

Yes, this is the famous FREE hog hunt place... Yep.. Very sketchy operation. Maybe having a client killed will run them out of business. Though it's hard to take responsibility for other peoples gun safety (or lack there-of)

My wife and I go a step further bolts open until we shot. Then open again. My wife’s dad was killed in a hunting accident and hunting was very taboo in her family... then came me. The least I can do is be extra cautious.

I actually moved to Texas to run that ranch. After a few days I left and did not go back, messed up my plans but things were not right. That being said, He is very strict with his safety rules and absolutely no guns allowed in the cabins even unloaded or you will get kicked out. There was a speech to everyone who came expressing safety. That being said, you can not police the people who come, many of them are not the brightest guys and many are know-it-all's that don't listen to anyone but themselves. Sad to hear it though.

Article says "Authorities are trying to find out if safety procedures where followed"...... fur real? Yep, FOR REAL. Authorities will try to determine how the shooting occurred and if there were other circumstances in play or not. It very well may be a negligent accident. For all we know, it could be intentional murder when when hunting partner got mad at the other. Would not be the first time something like this happened in the woods. Disappointed in you fellas. Guess who runs this so called operation??? I will check in with yall this evening and see what yall come up with. We know who runs it. Says so in the article. What is the big deal? Tragic.

Though it's hard to take responsibility for other peoples gun safety (or lack there-of) I am sure this will not run them out of business. I am sure all the forms were signed and IR is not going to be culpable for client negligence. They have been sued before. No doubt they will be sued again.

The name of the ranch didn't ring any bells but when I read the other linked story I remembered this guy. I have a serious problem with anyone who screws hunters, but I'm not sure how he can be held responsible for this. Assuming this is an accident (I don't believe there is any evidence to the contrary), it falls squarely on the shoulders of he hunter who didn't follow basic safety practices.

Really? He has some of the most annoying ads on YouTube. I don't watch that much youtube ive really never heard of the guy or operation I have never seen him on YouTube. His ads used to pop up everywhere though if you ever searched the word hog. They were always free hunts or you won a free hunt. He had his own sticky thread in the hog section here warning hunters to stay away from the place. Hence the charge by Greg Abbott at the time. He changed the name of the ranch and removed his name as best he could. Don't think anything came of the charges except being more transparent on pricing. It was a scam to get out of state guys.

Day hunts on 265 acres? Sounds as ridiculous as it is. Who would pay to do this?

I get upset with my hunting partner when I pick him up from the stand. I know he unloads the gun, but he has a bad habit of sweeping me with the muzzle of his rifle when he puts it into the back seat of my truck. I tell him time and time again, but the old man is an old dog that can't learn new tricks. Really tragic, and sad, as it could have been prevented, and we all need to remember how fast things can go bad. That's a lie. He's unwilling to change. Next time, don't tell him, jump all over him and he'll get the point. If not, you need a new partner, because the time he forgets to unload it is when that accident will happen. It's your life though, and if you don't find yourself valuable, then keep on being okay with it.

So, this Guy sweeps my son, who was about 12 at the time, with a loaded shotgun while dove hunting. My son makes a big deal about it, wasn’t rude but jumped out of his seat and said something like, “come on man!! I’m 12 and know not to do that.” My buddy says hush kid I’ve done this longer than you’ve been alive, my gun is on safety. Boy comes back with people get shot all the time by guns that were supposed to be on safety or something close to that. He heard that one from me which is why he said it. Partner gets upset and wants me to discipline my boy for “being a smart arse, and being disrespectful.” Told him Sorry buddy but I agree with him, you do it again and a disrespectful kid will be the least of your worries....He headed to the truck and waited until we had finished hunting. I drove him home without a word said and he never called me for a hunt again. We haven’t talked in a long time now. Didn’t really want to lose a friend over it but it is what it is. Some people get too comfortable around guns and become complacent.....dangerous.

I have had several incidences with muzzle sweeping, some loaded and some not loaded. The most dangerous thing I see, personally, is fully loaded rifles in deer camp. I don't like this at all. One of our members was handling is lever gun a lot with a lot of movement to the muzzle and I asked if it was loaded with a round in the chamber. He said yes, I asked him to unload the chamber for safety reasons. He did no problem, but this should be a no brainer with a rifle in deer camp.
I can be the safest person with a firearm, but the person near you who is not is the one who will kill you!

Had a little incident with my son and my then hunting partner. I stay on all my kids about gun safety. You didn't lose a friend, he did. Chances are really small that anything would have ever happened, but now you 100% know he won't shoot anybody you're hunting with. The patriarch of our hunt camp in OK makes a speech at the beginning of every year. In that speech, he points out the biggest, hairiest, scariest looking guy, and also points out the meekest, most shy looking kid and says that anyone, at anytime, can question whether a chamber is empty, whether or not a safety is on, or point out barrel sweeping, etc. He makes sure that anybody, big or small is comfortable with bringing up gun safety, and that gun safety is the absolute, most important thing. Period. And if you don't like that, than you can leave. You're son was right, as were you.

It sickens me that we lost a brother due to "STUPIDITY" anyone who doesn't unload ( EMPTY CHAMBER) every time we enter a risky or unstable situation is risking a tragic outcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you hunt with someone who makes you nervous fix the problem or leave the problem. I love hunting and I cherish my hunting friends however I cherish my life more than the sport or any relationship. We must all make this thing we love SAFE. Every tragedy devastates a family and puts another nail in our sports coffin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When in a vehicle what's everybody do with their gun? Point the muzzle to the floor or to the ceiling?

When in a vehicle what's everybody do with their gun? Point the muzzle to the floor or to the ceiling? Floor. And there’s never a cartridge in the chamber. Ever. I’m not knocking the guys who require a full unloading before entering a vehicle because that’s probably the best practice. But I hunt: 1)only with guys I know and trust are safe and 2)where sometimes a shot opportunity may present itself while riding. I’m sure you do also on the antelope hunts.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

Floor and empty - but make sure your floor is clean! My buddy's rifle gobbled up a piece of corn the other day and luckily he noticed it jammed in the end of his rifle before he took his next shot! Would it have been an issue? Maybe, maybe not. Easy fix - put a piece of tape over the end. Seen other people do that, but haven't done it myself before. Will do it from now on if hunting in a ranch truck (corn and mud on the floorboard) after my buddy's experience.

Floor, but if we're not hunting on the way back to camp they're unloaded, put in a scabbard and put in the bed of the truck pointing at the tailgate.

Floor was how I was taught, so that is how I do it. Same here. And my grandpa's truck has a hole in the floor board to prove it. Buddy of mine hopped in with one in the chamber and the safety "on" as we tried to chase down a coyote. He found out the hard way that the safety was faulty when we hit the first bump in the road. To his credit he's never done it since and that was nearly forty years ago.

My boys and I carry the guns in soft sided cases. We carry to and from the stand in the cases. Get in the stand, uncase, put the case behind your chair, and load up. Reverse before climbing down. Don't worry about what you see outside the stand because you aren't hunting once you get out of the box. The deer will always be there later, the side benefit is that my rifles don't get banged up getting in and out of stands.

Man!! The minute I am done hunting, I unload my rifle with a round out of the chamber. Rounds are in the magazine, but the chamber is empty. This story is why I do this. I know guys who carry a rifle fully loaded with the safety engaged. Safeties fail, get bumped or switched off, and now you have a disaster waiting to happen. Ignorant! I do the same before leaving to go to the stand as well. Peace of mind.

Same here

This is the reason I became a Hunter safety instructor I attempt to instill a love for the activity but an overriding awareness of the danger for inattention and or any carelessness. Never Never have a loaded firearm in a situation where you lack control or a need to shoot. I cant imagine the pain all are experiencing for this avoidable catastrophe. My prayers for all involved!!!!!

I load and unload in the stand, never go in or out with a loaded gun. Same. Been my protocol all my life unless I'm still hunting.

Wow, y'all dug up this thread from the grave! LOL. I was reading through the comments, got to a comment on page two, and thought, "That sounds like something that I would say." It IS something I would say, cause I said it two years ago! LOL.
That said, it's a good topic to bring back up. Unload your chamber, safety on, watch your muzzle, finger off the trigger, and treat every gun as if it is loaded. Follow those 4 rules. even if you accidently overlook one of those rules, the rest will still keep you safe. But that does not mean to just purposefully overlook one of them, then your safety net is gone.
Be safe guys!
