Put oats, austrian peas and radishes out 3 weeks ago and everything is up and growing. Have more daylight pics than we had in last two years. Scattered turnips today. I think i have bought my last bag of corn. Ths was totally no prep other than brush hogged a week earlier. Forgot to take pics but will take some next week.

Cool.......Keep us informed......Had 100 lb mix in with our wheat when planted and added another 20 lbs peas last week.........hope we do not get to much heavy rain......keep us posted and will take some pics later.......

This is 100lbs oats, 50lbs austraian winter peas, 100lbs of 13-13-13 per acre. 21 days after planting and lots of good rain in Cass county in East Texas

Same thing we put in + radishes. We used no fertilizer and didn't even scratch the ground.

How big is that plot Mr. T?

My best guess is 2 acres. I put 4 sacks of oats and two sacks of peas and 200lbs of 13-13-13. Got loss of good rain.

This was about 10 days after planting. It is up about 6-inches now.

I didn’t spray my plot this year before planting and it looks better than ever. Not sure, but I may have been using one of those extended kill herbicides in years past that was hurting seed germination. But then, it was most likely the fact that for the first time in several years, my plot saw good rain just a few days after planting. I think it was three weeks before last season’s plot saw any rain.

As in years past, I’m not expecting to see a lot of daylight activity until December when the temps are cold and the acorns are long gone. But in the meantime, this guy showed up last week standing in the shady area of my plot just a few feet from where I took a nicer buck last season.

Texas Dan, I agree that the plots are at their best when the acorns have been eaten or soured from laying on the ground to long. I'm hoping that with all this rain, they will sour much quicker this year, making the plots even more attractive to the deer.

Yes, plenty of rain helps sour the acorns for sure.

Something else that I do in the late season is “sweeten” my plot by scattering corn near the area where deer prefer to enter it. You might say I’m adding a little something extra just outside their safety door to the brush so they will step out into the open during daylight. I will scatter the corn around noon on the day before I intend to hunt it and will not hunt it that evening. I try to scatter the corn well enough so the deer have to work harder to find it all and so that some might still be there the next morning. Then I slip in early the next morning being prepared to stay until noon if needed. I cannot count the number of times when I hunted in the morning and saw nothing until after 10am. And then all of the sudden it seemed as if someone opened a gate.

One other great thing is that the cost was less than $40. My feeder eats more then that every time I fill it.

$40 for a plot that will feed deer for months, that's a bargain. FYI, don't plow it under when it dies off, most of the time it will green back up in the spring before truly dying. I plow under in June. I think that the oats drop a lot of their seed in the spring and it helps next years plot.

Yep... and I don't have to worry about critters tearing up feeders in the off season.

This is true. However, feeders don’t require rain and moisture.

Looks like the timely rains are helping many of us out this year. First time in a few years we have had a good stand on our plots, wishing at the moment we had put in a lot more area but hind sight is always 20/20.

Anybody else needing the rain to quit. My foodplots can't catch a break. If it doesn't stop I'm gonna be able to stock my foodplots with fish and quit worrying about deer.

Mine could sure use a week without any more moisture.

Our soil has a lot of sand and drains very well. Couple that with we only have about 1-2 acres MAYBE this year and they are hitting them and ill take all the rain the falls. We had such a dry start of the year up till September that im not going to quit being happy about rain till the place is under water.
