So, I have been in the DFW area a couple years now. I grew up walk and stalk hunting on BLM land. I scouted and hunted quite a few public areas in north Texas last year and saw not even a sign of deer ( I did see plenty of hog sign). Question is, is it even worth the time to deer hunt on public land? Does anyone have any experience or tips they are willing to share?

I used to live by the LBJ Grassland north of Decatur. We still have some acreage that borders it to this day.
It's hard to hunt, blue stem everywhere.
There are some monsters that come out of there EVERY YEAR. Year after year I've seen some bruisers get hauled out.
I know this, if you start hunting it the 2nd or 3rd weekend you most likely won't run across anyone else. Especially if you are willing to go mid week.
The opening weekend or 2 and the last weekend or 2 there's gonna be several people out there.
The deer are there I promise, go and scout it and come back when I mentioned.

I second the grasslands. I went out there with a buddy last year and saw 6 deer in my one and only sitting. He had already scouted the place and had me a ground blind set up tucked way into a cedar. If you put the time in you'll find some nice to places to hunt out there with hardly any pressure. I didn't take a deer that day but saw a nice heavy horned 8 just out of bow range. From what I remember you can only take doe the week/weekend heading up to thanksgiving. He ended up taking an old 6 pointer and a spike last year.

Put in for the draw hunts. Haggerman is the first that comes to mind, there are several others. You have to go farther off the parking lot than any others will. As was mentioned, later in the season most lose their enthusiasm by then. Put in for the state park draws as well. Good luck.

I appreciate the responses. I did not go north west last year, I will definitely check out LBJ grasslands.

There are no deer in the lbj grasslands. Not a one. Zip. Move along. When there is a deer it ends up with 7 arrows in it. Fights break out. People are hurt. Reputations destroyed. Much bail money squandered.
No matter how high a duck flies a hammer still breaks a window.
