Who has experience going on a Spring bear hunt?

I'm looking at Idaho, NM, AZ or Canada.

I do not want to hunt over bait at all. I'm also not afraid of a DIY hunt with the exception of Canada of course.

Let me know your experiences.

I used to hunt Colorado for spring bear years ago when there was a season. Hunted Idaho once many years ago. We got the permits and put out bait but did best glassing/stalking. About 50% success for our group on those hunts. Best success was over baits in Colorado that a local guide had out for his non-resident hunters, his hunters had tagged out and he let us use his baits.....he was also a taxidermist so he got our business....

Done both baited and stalk in Canada. Always been DIY hunts personally so no recommendations as far as outfitters go. If it was me I would probably go coastal British Columbia. Beautiful remote country, really good numbers and some of the largest black bears in North America.

That sounds like a good business decision, on both sides!

I'll be doing an archery spring bear hunt here in AZ starting May 5. It will be my first time hunting bear in the spring (I have done several fall bear hunts with a rifle, one successful), as well as my first backpack hunt. I am heading out this weekend for a 2-night scouting trip, which will also serve as a short shakedown cruise for my gear. Probably not much snow left in the Catalina Mountains where I'm going.

Canada is going to be your best bet. Literally any of the territories bordering the US have a lot of bears. Not a whole bunch of states with liberal spring tags.

Alaska is your best and cheapest black bear hunt.

Thanks, Billy

Early spring bear hunting should consist of glassing the south facing grassy slopes and looking for them in the openings like that. Their diet is nothing but grass when they emerge from the den for a few weeks usually. Spring bear hunting is much easier than fall bear hunting unless baiting is used.
