Looking at a jacket and pants combo. I think i am set on the Super down Ultra jacket but can't figure out what pants to get. Looking for something that has some insulation but can also wear as an outer layer. Not really interested in the Super Down Pro pants as they look like they will tear if you wear them besides sitting in a blind. Dont really need rain pants as i hunt in SW Texas.

What temps are you expecting to hunt in? By and large, for coolish temperatures the Attacks and Chinooks are good. For cold temperatures, then the Guides are good.

Maybe low 30's in the AM and warms up after that on most days in December. Val Verde County is where i hunt.

I just got the super down ultra jacket this week and headed east of Edmonton next week for goose and duck hunt. I was amazed how lightweight the jacket was. My first thoughts were I paid $300for this? After wearing it for 10 mins inside my house I was hot as hell. I didn’t get the pants so I’m not much help there but I’ll let you know how the jacket works out. Temps are high of low 30’s. Lows of mid 20’s so should be a good test.

FYI I’m 6’3 215lbs with an athletic build and the XL jacket fit well. I know they are advertised as athletic fit and they are. If you don’t have a fit build order one size up.

The Chinooks are in the Kuiu Outlet with limited sizes available. If your size is not available, then take them off the table.

The Attack pants have your listed temperature range covered. You can always grab a pair of their base layer bottoms. Easy to put on and take off if you tend to run on the cool side.

The Pro pants also have you covered but very limited sizes available. More coming in November (supposedly). They are claimed to be more durable than the Attacks.

The Talus pants could also meet your needs. Some additional protection that may or may not be applicable to where you hunt.

I wouldn’t buy Kuiu for winter TX, and I have a good amount of kuiu.

It’s an active performance/mountain only brand. It’s built around layering principles. When you Hike, you strip down, get to top to glass layer back up.

With that said that temperature range would be more along the guide pant line, with heavy pelton base layer. As it heats up you drop your pant and use side zips on the base layer to shed them. .

Currently have Sitka and like it but my OCD does not like how all the camo does not match so looking to change it up this year. Have a couple of pieces of Kuiu so figured I would go all in since I like what I have.

I'm a big Kuiu fan- need a better idea of what style of hunting you will be doing. I found the attacks were great if I was layering and staying somewhat active (ie Colorado elk rifle season at 8-10,000 in late october). Maybe not the best for walking a few hundred yards to a blind and sitting there all day.

If im in one position for a long enough time I get out my superdown pants and put them over my lower body layers. BUT- I will NOT walk anywhere while wearing them because they are made to be stout pants.

Sounds like you might wanna check out the Sitka Fanatic series made specific for whitetail hunting.

Currently have the Stratus line of Sitka and think i am just going to stick with that as the out layer and then get some of the Kuiu base layers.

That makes sense why you are asking now, Sitka has a dedicated Whitetail line. Unfortunately kuiu doesn’t. I do think Kuiu has best base layer both merino and synthetic at this time, with Firstlite a very close second.

Zip off bottoms are only way to go in my opinion. I really like the peloton 97 hoody also.

x2 on the merino zip offs for a base layer. I run the 145 and 210 weight tops as well

The more i read this thread the more i keep buying. Just bought a vest, snap shirt, and jacket for casual wear. Now i might have to try those zip offs. think the 145's ear good for south TX or should you go 210?

Lol, well might as well support a hunting company!!! Think I’m pretty much went to solids on nose my hunting stuff now a days anyway.

I have the 145’s. And for me they are plenty, but if its real cold, at or below freezing I’m in bibs and fleece wader pants.


The peloton 97 is my favorite casual pull over.

Yeah you know it is hard for those deer to see your camo when sitting in a blind so why not get something you can wear when not hunting as well.

Im duck and goose hunting outside of Edmonton, Ab as I type this. I’m very impressed with my ultra down jacket. It’s high 20’s and I have a long sleeve shirt and my jacket on and I’m very comfortable.

Well I passed by the Kuiu store in Dixon while heading to Napa and I can say that was an expensive stop...
