Ok my daughter shoot her first deer sunday with her bow. It was a little higher then I hoped and the deer was quartering to us by the time of impact. Question is should we have had a decent blood trail even with a single lung and gut shoot. we got a pass trough but when tracking we were only getting drops of blood with the occasional larger drops of blood. She is using the magnus stinger with bleeders

I have seen this happen on high shots before. Here's my theory...most of the bleeding is internal. The chest cavity will fill up with blood before it starts leaking out the hole left by the arrow, and as that hole is higher up on the body, it does not leak out.

I have put the dog on several deer shot about where she hit that one that were one lung shots with very little blood trail. Unless using a large cut expandable broad head then blood trails can be small and even them high with one lung hit the trails can be not so good.

It is more about the one lung hit than the higher than wanted hit I think. The hole in the gut doesn't bleed much and there will be some blood pump out the hole but less from a hit near the back of the lungs than nearer the front of the body.

Very glad you found her deer. I do not worry much about blood trails but have trailed quite a few and these days the dog gets that chore if needed, his nose is much better than my eyes.

I have seen the exact same thing using 550 grain arrows from a 72# bow at 30 inches. I've seen multiple complete pass throughs with a 2" cut Rage broadhead and saw minimal blood.

I completely agree with what unclebubba said.

Shot choice and placement always trumps what head we shoot. Personally I like a wide cut. I shoot a Rage head from a compound for that reason. If I don't do my job 100% it gives me a better chance than a smaller cut head and I need as good a blood trail as I can get the older I get. Razor sharp heads are critical as well. The Stinger is a great head. Just make sure it is always sharp. A head will dull if you shoot it into a target. It can dull riding around in a quiver. Always touch them up.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

I would just let her know that quartering too is a low percentage shot and she should try to wait for a better shot. With a low poundage setup the broadhead she is using is about as good as any.
