Dang just about anything has to feel better than those old straight stocked lever guns. and a 22-250 is going to be shooting a much lighter bullet. Never really considered a 22-250 to have much recoil. But according to Chuck Hawks recoil table it appears to be 50% less

22-250 will have little discernible recoil. For my son, I found a Rossi break open .357 mag rifle. I handload, and some 140 gr. hornady JSP over blue dot is a pussycat load. Most factory loads up to and including 158 grain are pussycat loads as well. The best part about it is that it is short enough and light enough for him to handle easily.

Maybe Hornady or Remington reduced recoil in the .30-30?

I have seen reduced recoil ammo for the .243. Many would not recommend anything with a smaller diameter than the .243 for deer.

For both the 243 and 30-30, I have full power loads, reduced recoil loads, and even subsonic loads for both. And I could load anything in between.

Here's a good recoil calculator I use.

I went through with my nephews.
243 is good, but 260/6.5 CM with 100 gr TTSX is even better.
Add a muzzle brake, they really make a significantdifference.

I bought the 260 for the kids, but liked it so much after trying that I use it myself.

The 100 TTSX at 3100 fps really has impressed me.

Both of those are great choices for the shooting range and close up on deer, like 50 yards or so. As he gets bigger, then he has a full power rifle that he already knows and is confident with.
