We're looking at buying a 5th wheel rv and I think I want and f350 srw as my tow vehicle.
Will be buying used, any years to avoid?
I realize a 1 ton may be a little overkill, but I'd rather have the extra towing capacity and not need it, than need it and not have it.....
Thanks!

What size TT? Single rear wheel may be a mistake if you want over 35 foot and pull it frequently.

Haven't picked an rv or truck yet, just in the researching stage...
Please tell me why you think a srw might be a mistake.
And yes, we are planning on being on the road full-time for a couple years.
Thanks!

Get a dually!!!!

Friend of mine has a 35' fifth wheel, and a single rear wheel one ton. He rode in my dually pulling his trailer. We only made it about 5 miles and he said "this feels way more stable than with it behind my truck". I said, yes I have control of the trailer, not the other way around.

Weight of trailer
Rough road
Wind
Turning

^^Some examples of what can make pulling a big, tall, heavy trailer less than pleasant with a single rear wheel truck.

Dually is going to be much more stable pulling. My dad has had both and I can tell you first hand it’s a major difference. Both will do the job but the difference is significant. Size of trailer may make a difference as well.

And price of truck you will likely find the dually cheaper.

Thanks for the input, so in the dually world, any f350 to avoid?
Is there a huge difference between the f350 and f450?
I've never had a dually.
Thank-you!

You are planning on a diesel engine, right? I'm not a "new Ford" owner, but I suspect when it comes to 6.7L Powerstroke, 6 speed auto, and 3.73 gears, everything after that is user preference.

Ram 3500, Cummins, 6 speed auto, 3.73 is what I drive. But I won't throw rocks at the Ford. Lots of happy owners.

Avoid the 450 for lots of highway use, they usually have 4:10 gears which means high RPM’s on the freeway, unless you are pulling a 40 foot TT. I would stick with the 6.7 Powerstrokes. The 6.0’s need work to be reliable. The 7.3’s are great and will last a long time, but the 6.7 has come a long way and makes the 7.3 look weak.

DRW for sure. The f450 can require a CDL depending on the GVW

For a Ford dually they usually are 4:10 gears make sure to get limited slip diff otherwise you can get stuck on damp grass. The 450 will have a 4:30 or lower gear so stay clear. If you can live with a super cab versus a crew cab then you can haul more as your truck weighs less. Make sure you buy extra fuel filters and water separate filters as well. The other thing is make sure it has the trailer tow mirrors sometimes they don’t.

Can get into that territory with a 1 ton, too. Of course it would take quite the capacity of an empty flatbed to do it, but it is possible.

1 ton dually, hooked up to a tandem 10k dual trailer, for example.

Based on your intended purpose, avoid a gas motor...go diesel, and by all means, get a dually.. As far as years to avoid, just google bad ford Diesel engines or Ford Diesel engines to avoid and see what pops up. Usually, some magazine articles or consumer reports will pop up, for your reading pleasure! Good luck and hope this helps!

We worked an accident where a Chevrolet Colorado was towing a triple-tandem gooseneck. We was over weight and the trailer weighed more than he was capable of towing. His tickets looked like an encyclopedia

The trailer had control of the truck, and put him where he did not want to be? And/ or was unable to stop?

That truck can't handle that trailer empty. Who installed a gooseneck ball in a mini-truck? Who even makes one for it?

A perfect example of natural selection at work.

You see them in halftons all the time.... just cause it can doesn’t mean it should.

Guys get insulted when you tell them they don't have enough truck. 'Used to be part of my job.

Pick the trailer first then do your own research on pin weight and GVWR. I did it backward and bought a two fiddy only to realize most toy haulers on the road are too big for even the three fiddy.

Another big mistake you can make is listening to anyone trying to sell you a trailer on your truck capacity. They look at one number and it's the total...not posting any attention to the two capacities above.

Do your homework. I bought the truck thinking big fifth wheel only to realize it was a small fifth wheel or a big tow behind.

Good luck!

Actually he just cut a corner short and grab the car sitting at the red light. I kid you not the trailer was 2 feet wider than the truck on each side. Trailer measured 10’6 x 24 with 3 tandems. Was a heavy SOB

10'6" was the load?
8'6" is the widest a trailer can be without special permit.

I don't get it.

You sure it wasn't 106"? Which would be 4" over the normal 102" limit.

(There are 12" in a foot, not 10 peep)
