My son got picked for a deer hunt at this spot. Has anyone been there? Do they assign a blind or compartment? What is the success rate? Where is the best place to stay near this spot? Thanks in advance and please help

Jason

No compartments or blinds. Usually allowed to scout a few days before and some folks setup tripods or pop up lines. Most spot and stalk. Be prepared to hike a bit, pre treat your gear for chiggers, ticks especially with the rain they’ve had.

Forgot to mention that the closest place to stay would be in Raymondville,TX. Also, my advise is scout and pick a spot and hunker down. Let those doing the spot and stalk scare the game towards you. Don’t forget your game cart. Best of luck to you and your son! I’ll be keeping an eye on this post hope you all tag something!

Just got home, after three days, 18+ miles walked, my daughter got a Nilgai Bull this morning at about 9am, 1.8 miles from the truck. It was one heck of an experience and I cant wait to do it again! There were 5 groups there this weekend, one group for a cow and bull, one group got a bull, and we got a bull.

Wow, now that is putting in the time and distance to get this done. I think the three toughest public hunts in Texas are in the Rio Grande Valley and East Lake is the toughest of the tough! I'm glad to see that there are young people that can see this hunt through! Please tell Lillee that she stands tall in one hunter's eye, as well as yourself!

Awesome pic! East Lake is a tough hunt. Especially if you get something in upper part of the area it’s a good haul!
