Just got a small plot cleared out this past weekend about 1/4 of an acre.
Before:

After:

I'm planning on planting the turner seed fall deer mix the weekend after next. Any recommendations on the best way to do it? I was planning on discing, seed and fertilize, and then drag it.

Nice. What implements and vehicle did you use to prep it?

All I used was a chainsaw, RZR, and Groundhog Max disc.

Sounds like a good plan, to get the Phos and Pa in the ground better, put out the fertilizer then disc once to get it in the ground, broadcast seed then drag, this will get more potash and phos in the root zone quicker, otherwise stick to your plan and hope for light moderate rain.

Looks great, you did a lot of hard work. Your plan of discing, seed, drag is as good as anything else.

I plan on bow hunting it with no feeder. If you look at the 2nd to last picture I have a tree stand about 5 yards behind where I'm standing. I have an entrance directly to the left and right and then a couple of more entrances at the far corners.

I've got 60lbs of 13-13-13 fertilizer, how much would you recommend for 1/4 acre? I'll do as western recommended spread the fertilizer and then disc it in. (no soil sample done)

On the fertilizer since this is your first time planting there the ground should be more fertile, so at least 100 lb per acre. If it was me I would use 1/2 of it (30 lbs) when you plant which will equal a little more than a 100 lb per acre and save the other half to put on maybe a month later before a good rain.

Disclaimer. I am not a farmer or an expert by any means, I have been planting food plots for 10 + years. I use to plant 3 food plots totaling about 5 Acres, I am down to one food plot and it is only 2 1/2 acre so I do it once. . I have never fertilized twice like I am suggesting, I know a couple of people that do with great success.

Any real knowledgeable people please chime in.

60lbs is a safe place to start, that's just between 200 and 300#'s per acre average. You can get the soil sample next spring if you want to tailor it better. A healthier, proper fed crop does better against competition so you don't have to go all nuclear with foiler poisons just for a deer plot, half those "weeds" deer like anyway imo.

I would listen to this guy before I would a person named Stub rofl Now keep in mind Western has a lot more money than most folks so he can afford to put a bunch of fertilizer on his place grin

Besides to me it is just a food plot, would I like it to look real nice and purdy, well yes. All I really care about is if it grows enough food to attract and feed them through the winter up

I would put 30lbs now and 30lbs once it is up about 4 inches right before a rain if possible. If not, then I would not worry about top dressing the plot. 30 lbs on 1/4 acre will be what you need.

Sez the guy that drives his Lotis elise to the deer lease, then uses his Land Rover (he leaves out there!) to get the 5 hunerd feet to the heated deer blind, truth in disclosure Stubs grin Any ways, I've seen your deer plot and you know what you're doing whip

I wanted to take out the 1 last big tree but didn't have the energy. I might end up nailing a licking branch to it and making a scrape under it instead.

I hunted in Stephens county for years. I really enjoyed hunting there. I let my wife take her first deer in Stephens county over 43 years ago and I created a monster that out does me almost every year. lol

Just checked my oats on my main plot (2 acres) that were planted on the 9th. They are about 10-12 inches high and the pea vines are about 8-10 inches long. This is going to be a good plot. They other two I planted the same way, not doing nearly as good. Oats about 6 inches, peas about 5 inches. Got lots of photos of deer feeding in it.

Nice congrats. I'm hoping to get out there to get a few hunts in and plant this weekend since it looks like good chances of rain early next week.

Well it was a weekend of ups and downs. Saturday morning I made a quick little brush blind next to a feeder and the right as it got light enough to see the feeder I decided to get my rangefinder out to range the distance of the feeder. Unzipped the pocket get the rangefinder out look up and see something white out by the feeder and the stupid the gopher move up popping my head up to get a better look. Immediately realize it's a buck and freeze, but it's too late and blows at me runs stops and blows again then takes off. After a hard rain Saturday night/Sunday morning I decide to go back to the same spot because the hogs usually show up at the feeder when it's muddy. Sure enough at 8ish a group of about 15 - 20 of them come flying in and immediately start eating. So I stand up and take one out and it runs off quietly so half the group leaves with him and the other half sticks around. So my first bow kill ended up turning into a quick double kill. I leave to go back to camp and get my rzr to go pick them up just to find out the rzr won't start. After messing with it for a little while I give up and take my truck down there and get them.

After finishing up with the hogs I turn my attention to finishing up the food plot. Unfortunately, with the rzr still not working it completely changes my game plan. What should of taken 30 minutes to at most hour to fertilize, disc, seed, and then drag turns in to maybe 3 hours of fertilize, seed, and manually rake. Also, with not having the rzr I had to park my truck about 100 yards away and carry everything in. Then found out my push spreader was broken and had to use my little Scott's handheld spreader. I was only able to get maybe half of the plot raked (the half in front of my stand) before I ran out of time and energy. After raking I had to run 3 strands of barbed wire around the plot to try and prevent the cows and possibly hogs from getting in and destroying it. Got done with that with just enough time to put up 3 mock scrapes/licking branches and hang a camera. I peed in 2 of the scrapes and hung a tink's dripper in the third, curious to see which ones get more attention.

Even with all the setbacks and issues that arose I was at least able seed on the ground. I'm hoping with the heavy rain predicted today and tomorrow the small seed will compact into the ground and flourish, but the bigger seed might be SOL.
