Yeah, I am still wondering about the "current record" for the county. It is a dandy of a hog, but I want to learn more about these records.

DNS, this goes back to the discussion you and I had about the two measurement systems/calculations being used to determine hog weights. One of them is wrong.

DNS, I know you use a slightly modified version of the KSU method.

In this recording, Luke Clayton describes the other commonly used method as shared to him by Larry Weishuhn.

I'll bet he could buck square bails 2 at a time. That's one tough kid.

I too am trying to figure what’s holding that hog vertical. Maybe I’m missing it, but I don’t see a chain or cable attached that would hold the hog in a vertical position. Maybe that kid in holding chain is an Marvel Avenger of some sort.

So you are saying this hog's weight was determined by measurement??

I have no problem with the method I use. It is confirmed every time I cross check.

The guys you provided a radio link to are exceptionally vague on some of their description, such as what a heart girth is. They also measure at the 'front of the ears right at the base of the hog's skull.' Very interesting. The front of the ears aren't at the base of the hog's skull.

I think they are misdescribing this method which is from the back of the base of the ears.

This picture is worth more than a thousand words!

Farm/ranch kids get excited when the old guys at the cafe start telling of the monster hog spotted grazing with the cows...why that hog was as big as a yearling, heck I kept having an extra yearling calf and just couldn’t understand why, till I seen that hog bust back into the woods at break neck speed...must weigh 700, cause I know them yearlings do...so the stories continue until one of the kids or parents spot the hog, and mention to their kid over chores or dinner...then it really begins when the kid just breaks up the entire ag class with the sighting details, to the point where even the ag teacher has to entertain the discussion, before refocusing the kids on the matter at hand.

Afterwards, every kid in ag class is hunting the, by now, legendary enormous beast of ???? County. Daily updates are given in ag class, with the reports passed along to faculty, who in turn, pass it along to the coffee shop elders, who by their very nature, then whip it up into a frenzy...why it walked along a five wire fence and its back was over the top, so the story goes...then it becomes the talk of the town, taking its rightful place of football, prom queen nominees, and big buck sightings...everyone is looking for “ THE HOG”...even the coffee shop elders pull their truck guns out and clean them, put fresh ammunition into their magazines, maybe put a shot or two downrange, just to confirm the sights.

By now, every kid old enough to reach the truck pedals, is wanting to go feed or check the cows and those that aren’t, are bugging their siblings to ride along...the girls are bugging their boyfriends, to hit the back roads and hunt he hog, forget the movies they had wanted to see. Inevitably, the entire football team/cheer squad gets involved in the process, the churches...it becomes the defining search that unites a town, no matter if you are Democrat or republican, Methodist or Church of Christ, or atheist...the town unites and rally’s around “the hog”
Kids begin dragging into school late, and after a brief update to the principal, are returned to class only to retell of their efforts to FIND the hog the previous evening.

Now, on to my observations of the picture...Trump won (hey the picture plainly shows it). The kid on the right is immensely satisfied he was along for the ride, as evidenced by the fact he holding his Victory drink and by the way he is holding it, not to mention his “body language” , in general. The kid standing on the truck, is the new school hero (like a state championship winning QB) and everyone will be wanting to hang with him for the rest of their lives (seriously folks, this is small town stuff). BTW, the fact he has posed acting like he is holding the hog up is designed to impress the girls, that in fact, he is the MAN. (BMOC)...and well he is, on campus, in town, in church, and for the rest of his life. Any time someone needs some help dealing with a problem, he will get the call.

Then the picture hits the coffee shop elders, they all laugh and chuckle, and his grandpa (sitting with the crew) tells how he got the hog to pose for the pic, and mentions comments made by his girlfriend, the ag teacher, the preacher, and Betty blue hair (while at the hair salon), the QB, the head cheerleader, and the school superintendent. In other words, as a result of this one picture, the community has been united, its generational hero has been anointed, and everyone from top to bottom of the pecking order is all smiles, even the kid that didn’t get to ride along...but got in the picture anyway.
