Have had various cheapies over the years but I need something solid for mountain hunting. Does anyone have a good suggestion?

I really like the biathlon sling from tab gear. I hiked 8 miles one day and 5 the next with mine in rugged hills last week in South Africa and it really made life easy going up and down a whole lot easier.

I like these slings from Slogan Outdoors. I have the Magnum series that I use on several rifles.

I like the original Quake Claw sling. It does not slip and does have a little stretch to absorb some of the jarring when walking. I tried some of the neoprene slings and I didn't like them because they had too much stretch allowing them to "walk" off your shoulder, having to re position constantly.

I own 3. The first one is still working like the newest ones 20 years later.

Not only comfortable, but allows you to carry the rifle across your chest at the ready position. Hands are free for binos, shooting sticks etc...

If you’re going to be walking a ways, say, on an elk hunt or something, I’d recommend a Vero Vellini. They make a reasonably priced, quality product. Most importantly, they are comfortable and stick to your shoulder. It’s what I use when I’m chasing elk, and that’s no light statement.

If using traditional sling studs this is my favorite.

I have one on my .270 and wouldn't trade it. Most comfortable sling I've ever had.

I have 2 of Vero Vellinis and that will probably be the only ones I buy here on out.

I see you have already found Vellini, But for anyone else looking at this i use a mystery Ranch Quick draw sling in the mountains.

I like this one as well.

I’ve tried them all from $15-100. Used Vero Vellini until I stumbled upon a cheapo rubber Limbsaver with a fat “carry bulge” just beneath the shoulder pad. Made things a lot more comfortable for me.

I don’t use a sling on my rifle anymore for mountain hunting since I went with a rifle scabbard pack though.
