I am on the hunt for a moderately priced camera for taking decent quality game photos. In our area, deer activity really picks up in sub-freezing temps. The cameras that I have been looking at (Nikon Coolpix P series, Canon SX series, etc.) have a specified operating temperature of 32-104 degrees.

Any experience with using any digital cameras in sub-freezing weather? Suggestions?

My mother in law bought me a FUJI Fine Pic S9900W that a pretty damn good little camera.

FUJINON 50x Optical Zoom (24 - 1200mm)* & Super Macro
920K-dot Electronic Viewfinder
16.2 megapixel 1/2.3-inch BSI-CMOS sensor
5-Axis Image Stabilization on movie shooting
New Remote Shooting**
Wireless connectivity with smartphones and tablets**
New 11 Advanced Filters

What I really like about this camera is you get allot in a small package and it won't break the bank. Another thing I like is it doesn't require recharging and uses standard AA batteries, this is a plus in cold weather where you can take the batteries out of a warm pocket and have plenty of power. You have 1200 mm zoom capabilities and good quality pic's. 350 to 400 bucks if you shop around, some are showing as much as 600 dollars. Trust me in saying you'll want all the zoom you can get. Let me also say that the Nikon P-900's are fixing to drop in price with the 1000's coming out and they have 2000 mm zoom. Best Buy is showing them for 600 bucks, most of the pictures I've posted in the last year have been with the p-900. It's much bigger and heavier than the Fugi.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

We have an older Nikon coolpix and it has never not taken a pic in cold weather. I take it outside to take cold weather pics to send my family from Wyoming. You talking cold or COLD? It has been outside in way below zero temps, say -25 ish. I do try to keep it pretty well protected til needed, in a small case in a warm pocket.
It also goes on every hunt from bison to antelope, pretty rugged for what we paid.
Newer models look better zoom and higher megapixel so we may upgrade just for that reason. Love the little coolpix for field pics and short videos.

My Nikon CoolPix 810 (60X) performs great here in Idaho from -30 to +110. Never a problem. Guarantee it sees a lot more bad weather here than yours ever will.

I took HWY's advice and got a Fujifilm S9900W as a starter. Zoom is important, and the AA battery function sold me. One of our leases has no electricity, so we are off the grid for several days at a time. I hadn't even considered the power source...
