I have a Cannon gun safe. Old style dial opening. Not electronic. As time goes by, the safe gets harder to open. Takes me 4 or 5 or 8 tries to dial the combination and have it open. It’s like the tumblers aren’t dropping, or whatever it is that tumblers do.
Anybody ever have this problem? What can I do to make this danged thing work right? Locksmith? New safe? Lubricate? How?

Never mind, I found the issue. The internet said that the combination numbers can drift a bit. I allowed for that, and the safe has opened fine each time.

Never spin the dial, ( turn ) this will cause the drifting issue also.

yep, my old cannon is very finicky too and combo numbers have drifted over about 1 but it still takes me multiple times to open by combo dial. Mine also has a key in the dial so during regular use I lock with key and then just have to be careful to move dial slowly to the first stop, turn handle and open.

I admit to having spun the dial, and more than once, not knowing any better. The internet has shown me the error of my ways, so now I turn rather than spin.
I really was worried that some day I might not be able to get into the darn thing.

Didn’t know that spinning the dial could lead to problems. I do it all the time. Won’t do it anymore. Learn something new on here all the time.

I had my Liberty Safe’s electronic lock replaced by a locksmith with a good quality dial lock. Thanks for the tip on not spinning the dial

Spinning looks good on TV, but not in real life. Lock Smith friend told me that!

I finally discovered that the lock itself has a little play. I can grab the shroud of the lock and rotate it 5 degrees or so. I now know to rotate the shroud completely clockwise prior to opening. This gets the lock back to opening with the "factory" combination instead of +1 or -1 on each number.

Cannon should have a lifetime warranty, 603. You might ask them to replace the lock or tighten it up.

I bought one with an electronic keypad...compared to the old frustrating dials, I won’t be switching back.
