An interesting article on feral hogs attacking people.

They aren't cape buffalo. I'm 54 and have been killing them on the ground for 38 years with muzzleloaders, crossbows, handguns and rifles. Not one time have I felt as if I was being charged. Nor do I personally know of anyone to have been charged. Out of the millions of pigs walking the planet there are only a handful of stories where people have been truly attacked. It happens but it is very unlikely.

Another example of oversensationalizm. They are not bloodthirsty creatures

But, keeps people like pigman in business.

I have known people that have been attacked by javalina, however.

Yep. I think many hunters who claimed to have been charged probably have zero experience working with any sort of livestock. If you grow up with livestock you tend to take a different view on animal behavior.

Most "charges" occur when the person happens to be on the trail the hog wanted to take as an escape route.

I agree. It makes for some interesting conversation though when I tell folks I'm going hunting "wild boar".
The best way to stop a hog from charging is to take away her credit card.

I hear it all the time when I talk about hogs and/or hog hunting...people think they are deadly animals that will slice your legs with their razor sharp tusks.

I always get a giggle and say I have not once seen or heard of a wild hog attacking a person, they are weary of people and run when they smell us or hear us. If you get hit by a hog, you were either in its way or you dropped a dead one on yourself...

I was attacked by a hog once and was so drunk I didn't mind. My friend drove me home and I never saw that hog again.

100% agree with you guys..... Especially on the "charges"; When I would guide construction clients on the owners ranch for a "hog hunt" I could always tell it was going to be a long weekend when guys would start strapping their Glock .40 to their hip "incase we get charged" smile

Well, bar hogs can be very dangerous and are known to carry disease. Good thing you escaped with nothing worse than a hangover.

The only time I've seen them be aggressive is when they are in a trap. But, any cornered animal will act like that.

Agreed. Killed hundreds of pigs and only happened once to me. But it'll still pucker your butt when it happens.

I’ve been in that same situation.

I’ve found that rolling onto your belly and playing dead will normally stop the charge

I've always just fed my buddy to her. It helps to tie his shoe laces together so he can't get away.

Yelp, I've never seen a pig attack. Especially after a big boar taking an arrow and tracking it for a while in thick cover to get up and come right at you grunting and mad as all get out. Especially after tracking and shooting a sow that was down from a wounding running shot. Especially after letting some boars out of a trap. Yelp, I agree. They never attack! Come on, man!

Yeah you are right a wounded animal of any species would never attack you.

You're too late, Chad. We're talking about another kind of hog now.

Wait, why would you let them out of a trap?

We had some interesting folks on a lease once. They liked trapping the hogs, only to let them out so they would run and we could shoot them running off. I will say, it was fun, but when the big one turns South on a North facing group of shooters to show his displeasure, it gets Western real quick!
