I think he's doing about as good as he can under the circumstances.

I sent him a message to come visit over here.

Last thing duck hunters want to hear is sad or bad news on the eve of yet another season. So .... I'll try to keep mine short. Following a lung cancer diagnosis in October, I had a "double lobectomy" on December 19th of last year where the surgeon goes in through the back ribs and removed two malignant lobes of the right lung. Had a few complications but was released to go home on January 6th to a loving wife and a couple dogs that missed their Daddy ... A lot! wink

Thought all the health problems were behind me and that I might even be able to bust a few caps later in the fall. Alas, such was not to be. I had a series of strokes beginning in early March that have ended my waterfowling days, permanently. We've sold our properties, gear, 81 of the 85 guns that we owned, and duck hunting has now been replaced by a few trips a week where we live on Denison Country club, searching for lost golf balls!

I'm grateful to be alive ... Had 60+ hunting seasons over my 77 years, owned and trained 9 gun dogs
that I loved and they loved me ... and have few if any regrets in this life. Thanks to all who have sent well wishes. I'm sure that they helped alot! Special thanks to Gary Smith (texas wetlands here) who bought our wetlands property after our 14 year run there. He's even agreed (believe it or not) to allow us to scatter our family ashes there one day!

This was a recent Facebook post that somewhat summarizes my near term future ... The reason for the Wikipedia definition of "Irony" somewhat dawned on me tonight...

My father Ernie, passed away in 1972, some 46 years ago. He was my absolute hero and died of Liver and pancreatic cancer. I too have both of those cancers and am not expected to live past year end which means that Dad and I shall have died from that same terrible disease 46 years apart.

Ironical? Who knows? Genetic ... quite possibly. However we both shared a love of upland bird hunting over well trained gun dogs; 3 cushion billiards, regulation pool, most competitive sports such as boxing and football, and both of us were scratch or near-scratch golfers for most of our adult lives. I was captain of my high school and college golf teams and played amateur tournament golf for a number of years after school.

Dad was a successful banker but died at age 63 before he could enjoy the fruits of his many years of efforts. Because of him, I vowed that if I did become successful in business, that I would retire by age 50 to enjoy the fruits of my efforts with a wonderful supportive life partner, Carol. I was able to do so, retiring at age 49 in 1991. Now, all these years later, my father and I will have enjoyed many parallels in life. Sadly, one includes dying of liver and pancreatic cancer. I loved my father so very much and I apparently plan on leaving this life as he did. See you soon, Dad.

Cappy ... At my side for thirteen years, in my heart forever.

Sorry all this is happening to you and hope your holding up ok. Do keep sharing your old hunting pictures and stories with us as long as you are well enough. We will miss them and you. I always think of you on my dogs birthdays and always will. My wife throws our dogs birthday parties just as y'all have for your dogs.

Just read this on FB

"Hi everyone, this is Jamie Catracchia, Jim's daughter from Seattle. I've been with him the past 9 days in Texas. You may have noticed he hasn't been posting on FB lately. He physically doesn't have the strength anymore to post. He wanted me to tell everyone how much he has appreciated the love, support and friendship from everyone. Please keep my dad and Carol in your prayers.

Carol and/or I will keep everyone updated..."

Keeping him and his family in my prayers.

Prayers for Jim and his entire family. I am glad you got to enjoy your success. I have my beliefs about what comes after life, but I hope, in some way, it includes a field, some birds, and a cherished pointer friend.
