The second rule of “Deer Camp” is please respect the sanctified nature of the camp. It is a place of solitude on one hand, and fellowship with real, live, human beings on the other. A place where the young and old bucks go to enjoy the great outdoors and share tales of daring do. To exchange thoughts on things of the past and of the present. You can’t learn anything with ear buds in and staring at that tool of the devil you’re so attached to. We want to bathe in the flickering light of the campfire…NOT the obnoxious glowing of your personal computing device!
And while we’re at, please leave your boom boxes and itunes at the house. We want to hear the haunting vocal stylings of Billy Bob and his gee-tar performing his thoughtful rendition of Merle Haggard’s “Sing Me Back Home” (let’s all pause while Junior googles Merle-Long may his music reign, in Jesus name, Amen). Yes Junior, Merle had a couple of pretty good tunes. Geez!
I think it important to remember that the native Americans didn’t necessarily go on so many hunts because they were starving. They had a hundred million bison a stones’ throw away. They went to seek peace and solitude away from the women folk where they could discuss important matters of the day, and teach the youngsters lucky enough to accompany them. It’s how tradition, method, and culture was passed down from one generation to the next. It’s why for thousands of years things in those societies worked. And, I believe, why things no longer work in ours!
Listening and conversing seems to be a lost art. I would encourage all to focus all your attention on the elders present whenever you can. I had the good fortune of hearing numerous times about the great depression and how bad things were. About the dust bowl era and about how folks lived before modern day America. Old man Red was a regular in camp and was a Marine who landed at Normandy (Norman-gee is in Texas…Norman-dy is in France. Take a moment to read about it). I’ve never landed on a beach in combat but I can sure see it in my mind’s eye from having heard the tale. “And there we were, chest deep in the blood-soaked surf. Bodies floating past us, German machine gun bullets whizzing by, screams of the wounded all around”…friends, what I wouldn’t give to hear that story one more time.
There was the one they called Preacher because he could pontificate like nobody’s business. He was sure the world went to hell the day we started letting women vote. Preacher was a Marine in Korea and was one of those at the Chosin Reservoir (The Frozen Chosin). The Marine Commander there was quoted as saying “Gentlemen, there are 200,000 Chinese to our north, south, east and west. They can’t get away now!” Real men, these. National treasures. These are examples of the kind of men who made this nation in the face of unthinkable odds against us. They are to be celebrated by everyone who walks free today. They are why we stand at the playing of our National Anthem, Mr. face of Nike! Stand your sorry a$$ up, ya hear? But, I digress. Deer camp is one of the few places and times we can be in the company of such true greatness for extended periods…to really get to know our elders. Revere the time.
And Junior, please hear me on this. The next time you want to try out your new rocket launcher from the front porch at sun-up, please give somebody a heads up, would ya? Had to replace 6 feet of floorboards from where Big Ed fell out of his rack. I was cutting vegetables for the night’s dinner. Almost cut off three fingers. I believe one fella momentarily swallowed his tongue. The point being, my natural inclination was to take a fork and gouge out that young man’s eye. Stay safe Junior. Use the sound mind God gave ya! Don’t disturb the peace.
Deer Camp ought to be treated and kept as hallowed ground. The likes of Kit Carson and Davy Crockett sat in these same camps before us, under the very same stars. To keep their traditions is a burden all ought shoulder so those who come behind us will still enjoy them. Where else can you sit around a fire with 10 year-olds and 90 year-olds and tell tales of hunts past and hunts to come? All while eating potted meat and crackers and drinking a beer. For you young folks, potted meat is anything that once had a momma and now resides in a can. Like sardines, tuna, vienna sausage, deviled ham, and the ever-ubiquitous spam. Wonder what the poor folk are having? We kings are dining on fried spam sammiches!
“See” the birds, squirrels, coons, hogs and other animals of the woods playing and doing as they do. You’ll learn a ton. “Hear” the elders sharing their many years of wisdom. "Listen" to the wind in the trees and the sounds all around you. “Feel” the peace and solace being in such a sacred environment brings you. You’ll be far better for the experience. Oh yeah, and you might even shoot sumpn.
As always, take a kid to the woods…to Deer Camp. Because there’s no greater place on this planet!

If I invite you to my ranch or fishing on my boat, DON'T EVER ask me if you can bring someone else with you!!!! Unless it's your child (or some fine looking woman)

If you want some friendly advice, get a haircut and take a bath. You wouldn't get hassled so much.

You say a "second rule" but expand that to many rules. All good stuff and well thought out but several paragraphs to cover "one?" rule?

Old age and treachery beats youth and stupid every time!

It's like I'm not good enough company, so they have to bring a security blanket friend.

Yeah, it's a long topic and pretty wordy. Hard to encapsulate it all in a sentence or two. Just the thoughts of an old hand that would like to see the young taught the right ways. I don't make up the rules...just do my best to pass them on, along with some random "old man" rants!

"What one generation tolerates...the next will suffer to excess"!!!

I Feed Indian Corn. The deer love it and all the colors make them stay at the feeder longer.

This is the type of camp I want to be a part of. The passing of the torch.

Anytime I was looking for a place to hunt or fish...I always searched until there was no cell reception, and then started looking hard for the right hunting patch or fishing hole. I just hate it when someone brings those dang cell phones on my boat or in my camp...and they do get a sometimes not so polite reminder to turn them off and put them away.

I quit watching the NFL, due to the kneelers. I want to be intertained, not have to endure political showboating...if they want to do that stuff, they can do it on their personal time and not at work, where I am subjected to it, by the media incessantly flashing it on the screen and droning on over it. Everybody has got a whine these days. I say, if they got time to whine, maybe they should take a job and get to work, maybe they will forget about what they we whining about.. and yes, they are serious and so am I...Sigh. Rant over.
