He wants to use this gun hunting the national forest, Sam Houston I think. I have shot it and yes with the irons that came on it you can put five shots on a paper plate at 100 yards. The folding stock has some vertical wiggle and the forend has no discernable finish on it. Gun looks new. It was imported by Century Arms, has grenade launcher sights, no bayonet. I think he should trade it off or sell it and get a real deer rifle but I bet he hunts with it this year.

Who is the "He" and why is this a concern?
If "He" can put rounds where they need to be the bullet will do the job just fine...
Is there more to this that I am missing?

What is a "real deer rifle"?

My nephew and a real deer rifle might be a Marlin 30-30 or a single shot shooting the 43 egyptian! He is also pretty young and I worry he might just let loose a 30 round mag full at a running deer. I guess I should try to find a 5 round magazine for it.

The way I read this it sounds like you are providing some guidance for him?
Why don't you go hunting with him and teach him the ropes the way you want it to be done and then he can get an idea for what kind of gun would be best suited for hunting with...maybe offer one of your guns for the first couple hunts

That is the plan. And he knows he can use any deer rifle I have. Wonder what the game warden would think of the ugly gun in his woods?

Game warden isn't going to care as long as it is a center fire and works, unless you are the warden and you want something different in his hands.

I don't have a problem with AR style guns in the woods but for some reason really don't care for AK's. Not so fond memories I guess.

For a beginner he doesn't need to add any handicaps to the accuracy of his shot, a wiggle in the stock is too much of a handicap to the weapon. He wants to use this gun hunting the national forest, Sam Houston I think. I have shot it and yes with the irons that came on it you can put five shots on a paper plate at 100 yards. Sounds like a great pig gun to me. Should be fine for a deer also. Not ideal but my first hunting rifle was an M1A and I got it to hunt pigs since I wasnt interested in deer at first. The M1a really isnt a bad deer gun either.
Good bullet and shot placement is what matters. Teach him the basics and let him learn on his own. Make sure he is using hunting ammo and guide him as best as you can but as he understands more about guns and gets more in to deer hunting he will probably evolve.
GO TRUMP!

My first "deer rifle" was an M1 Carbine with irons. My Brother and Dad put in the time with me on the range and it wasn't a problem. If he's comfortable with the gun and can shoot it, go for it.
As for an encounter with a warden, if you demonstrate responsibility and have proper paperwork you should not have a problem, but if you act like a fool in front of him he will think you are.
In the grand scheme of things over the years, I'm pretty sure there has been more wildlife harvested with inappropriate iron sighted guns than all the fancy guns with glass optics.

We shot 6 boxes of Monarch fmj through it yesterday. That the stock does not come anywhere near your cheek when looking down the sights takes some getting used to. The gun is dead reliable. We didn't find any hunting ammo at the sporting good shop, they were out but we will keep looking. My first deer gun was a full choked mossberg 20 gauge bolt action. It actually shot Remington slugs pretty good. Going to have to put some kind of finish on the forearm to keep it from soaking up moisture.

Most all 7.62x39 on the shelf is FMJ. This Fusion is a good deal for a whitetail capable round. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/100165...itzer-boat-tail

Anyone have experience with the Monarch hollow pointed ammo? Does it expand, it looks like a hollowpointed FMJ round to me.

Great one more idiot in the woods on public land to have to watch out for. Man up and buy a real hunting rifle with a high powered scope so you can make a perfect kill shot.

You can find sp and hp usually at Academy. Sportsman Guide on the net sells them have a couple different silver bear, gold bear other brands also. Don't have an AK use in SKS and AR. Cheap ammo.
