What’s amazing is they had to get a judge to rule it could be killed.

How do you hunt tigers? Bait? Spotlight?
How big of a gun do you need?

How big of a gun do you need? From a blind built in the trees (machan) over bait or water. Or by heavily orchestrated drives involving beaters on the ground and hunter/spotters on elephants. Those were the two most common methods. From what I can gather the .375 H&H was a popular caliber. Corbett used a 7x57 Mauser on many, if not most, of his kills. But most went to larger calibers later as hunting them became more popular as a sport. Corbett’s books are excellent reads.

I would think dogs would help locate a Tiger pretty quick.

Here is a pic of the actual rifle.

Here is a pic of the actual rifle. That rigby rifle was used to kill a leopard. IIRC he used a .404 on tigers. Btw rigby still makes that same rifle called the highland stalker. I’m indifferent about hunting cats but I would love to shoot a tiger.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I started reading The Tiger, which is about the hunt for a man eater in Russia. It was a little slow, but is a good story so far.
I just turned it on . I was looking bird dogs in the butt this morning.

My dad was among the last to kill a tiger in India, 1970. His hunt was along the lines of NP description, but he was in a machen at the head of a valley and the beaters and elephants moved along the edges and valley floor. In my fathers words, "we had been still for 2 hours as the beaters and elephants moved toward us, they were almost to our position and I was thinking the Tiger had slipped away when suddenly he was there at 45 yards". His Biesen 375 H&H roared and the great cat was dead, the PH was happy as the worn teeth indicated he was about to become a man eater. I will see if I can find a picture or two. That was his last big trip after nearly 20 years of hunting the globe.

That’s quite a hunting heritage-the likes of hunting that will never be seen again.

Ok, my dad should have written a book himself about his hunting the globe, he started early unlike most men he went to Alaska in his 20 and from there hunted the world with the who's who of that era: CJ McElroy (SCI Founder), Henry Selby, Claude Vasele etc. He took pride in his trophies and only took unique animals and those that in his eye were true trophies. Several of his animals are still in the books after all these years. Our house was built around the trophies and life was driven by hunting and the outdoors. His biggest trip was truly around the globe he flew west and hunted Aisa then Africa then home over a 60 day period. Back then he boarded the plane with his rifles and handed them to the Captain for storage during the flight. He was a unique individual and a superb hunter and I was lucky to be his son and be trained to hunt and shoot by a truly experienced individual that was there and got multiple T shirts. A couple more for the road.
