The article has been updated and they found the guide's body. That's an awful way to go.

Tragic.
I’ll be outside Yellowstone mtn goat hunting in a week. A reminder to keep your head on a swivel - especially with game down.

Sad deal. Hunter should have unload that pistol into the bear.

For whatever reason, the Kodiak bears are a lot more active this year too. Our first two trips combined we saw 3-4 bears total. This trip we saw 14. The locals were all commenting on the increased activity this year.

One of the few good things that Obama did was to agree with Congress to make it legal to carry firearms in our National Parks, which of course includes those which have bears living in them. Granted, hunting is not permitted. However, a gun of sufficient caliber is a good thing to have when hiking in bear country. Link

You are making no sense as usual when applying logic. Did they need grenades? They had a legal gun and one still died. Obvious thing to consider is the bear population proper.

The fact these men were not illegally hunting in a National Park makes it obvious to anyone with half a brain that my comment was not directed at them but only a general comment about being cautious when hiking on public lands. My comment made complete sense to those who recognize that ANY topic offers the opportunity to make general comments about matters that relate directly or indirectly to it.

As often as we hear of grizzly attacks is seems as though they are out hunting us.

Sad deal. I just got back yesterday from an elk hunt 10 miles from there. Having just spend a week in those mountains, it does not surprise me. That area is THICK with grizzlies and they know they are the top of the food chain.
Had one stalk up on us while cow calling. For a 600-800 lb animal, those things sure can be stealthy. Also watched one maul and bury a black bear cub from only 75 yards away. Hard to appreciate just how big and powerful grizzlies are until you see them up close and in action yourself.

I heard from my buddy, Jim Zumbo that the guide that was killed was a great guy and father of five kids. Prayers sent to all. Adios, gary

Sad deal. Hunter should have unload that pistol into the bear. Some list a shotgun as the best protection against grizzlies. I can only assume that includes a shorter barreled (defense) pump or semi action 12-gauge but not certain what load. Perhaps a 3 or 3-1/2 inch load of buckshot. Definitely easier to point and unload the most lead multiple times in one direction.

Yes, it is absolutely tragic, and what makes it even more miserably painful is this could have been prevented, experienced guides always use extreme caution and enough gun, my thoughts and prayers to the families. DC

Definitely easier to point and unload the most lead multiple times in one direction. A shotgun is good, ideally loaded with slugs for larger bear. However, the issue here wasn't having guns so much as it was having access to guns. Why the guide and the client won't both carrying on their person is bothersome. There seems to have been only one gun and it was in a pack and the pack wasn't on their person. They say the attacks are a rare event. Sad deal. They are rare, but they make big news when they happen. Surprise encounter defensive attacks are apparently the most common form of attack. These are often quick attacks, that while may be of short duration can still be quite brutal. Here the bear often runs off after a short period of time. Even unarmed humans have a good chance at survival because of the brevity of the attacks, assuming they can get help in a reasonable amount of time. IIRC correctly, attacks around down game (killed by the bear or just claimed by the bear) are exceptionally dangerous. The bear isn't going to run off unless it is defeated by whatever it is fighting. This is because it is defending its food or food it intends to make its food, which sounds like what happened here. Then there are predation attacks where the bear actually hunts the human. These often turn out quite poorly for an unarmed human.

As mentioned, the issue is not so much what weapon you have, but having it accessible and being effective with it in a matter of seconds while under extreme stress.
