Well, I have finally been lucky enough to draw the archery hunt at RC. I am pumped. There is quite a bit of info on this WMA on the net but all of it seems to be from before the big flood and the closing of the hunting for a year or two.

They resumed the deer hunt last year if I'm not mistaken. Did anyone here do the hunt last year and if so, have things changed?

Feel free to PM me if you would like to keep this off the public forum. peep

Thanks!

Been thar time or two. Doe-spike hunts. Been many moons ago. It has some nice deer & if it been closed couple years, bucks be few years older. Flooding will push the deer off WMA, but they return. Then U already figure dis out, so i's gonna hush.
Best Wishes on up coming hunt.

And don't forget this WMA has the highest concentration of water moccasins in the state of Texas! They are protected too.

Rickt, I've heard that on the snakes. Mostly from locals that I've come across.
I've bow hunted it once and let me tell you it's a tough sob. Some big boys in there but if you go to scouting it like a deer lease you'll never see one.

I bowhunted there before it was a draw to bowhunt. Actually there were a lot of deer then but he manager there was a true prick. I also did the blackpowder feral hog hunt every spring for a couple of years but the timing of the hunt and the WMA manager's incompetence and way out in left field ideas on management turned me off the place.

The one time I walked in there to scout I killed a water moccasin.

Yea, we have a few water moccasins down here on the coast too. My main Hunting boots are a well broken in pair of Lacross snake boots.

The number of water moccasins and rattlers has gone down though because the hogs are out of control. I'm not sure which one I'd rather have around.

My record was 5 in one day with a machete.

The biologist is actually pretty cool other than he's retarded about letting predators walk. Biologist like him like coyotes more than people. The tech that's been there forever is a typical state employee. he is a Richard because he can. It's a big , cool place that's worth it.
Good luck

Predators are the ultimate balance of an ecosystem, no reason to shoot them out there. The staff does a good job out there all things considered, they have to deal with a bunch of idiots and law breakers.

That's how I was removing the abundance, til one of the staff told me the snakes were protected!

Well looks like they are going to cancel the bowhunt this year due to flooding... and the manager there, still a prick.

It’s pretty bad up here. I will bet that most of the deer hunts at Richland Creek will be cancelled.
