Reminded me of one of the reasons we went to stand and fill. Didn't want to hijack someone else's thread, but figured I would show a series of pictures of what happened to our crank up feeder eeks333

Yep, feeder is working good

Pops lowering it down and it came down fast!! The bolt in the pulley system broke and it had about 250lbs of corn in it

Yep...it's broke rofl

Better go get some help...so he got my BIL

And of course, had to stop to tell him the story...."it just fell"

I've heard of a crank up feeder fall like that and land on someone or one of its legs go straight thru a foot. Those scare me more than a ladder does.

Nothing makes you madder than having a big deer on camera then having feeder issues! Especially when your 3+ hours away!!

New feeder looks good.

Take Care,

I just bought four new feeders that you have to climb a latter to fill. Sometimes, we don't get any smarter as we age. bang

Never been a fan of crank up feeders. Seen to many of them break after being used with no maintenance on them. Glad that your Dad was standing to the side when it broke. First thing I would have grabbed was a sledge hammer instead of a sawzall.... grin

Cool series of pictures. Glad your dad was standing at the crank when that happened and that no one was under it.
We have several crank-ups, I hate standing under them things. And it seems the older I get the harder they make them handles to crank.

Man that’s not very neighborly..... just rub it in, you refuse to buy one of the higher quality feeders your neighbor builds.

Yeah paaaleze Trex, I was there and recall their conversation quite well "If we are going to get help filling feeders out of TRex, then we need a feeder he can reach the top of" I remember it like it was yesterday grin

Glad there was not an injury. Stand and fill the only way to go. Nice buck!

Case in point, group leaves for hunt, pops bust nice deer and back at camp by beer 30, Trex is still in stand 3 days later going thru deer photo flash cards looking for "the one". rofl

Friend of mine that hunts here is a welder, he made us up a bunch of cradles to put our existing barrels in. All stand and fills on the ranch but one, and it has a built in ladder.

Why doesn't someone just build the stand with the cage (just like the picture above) and sell it just like that! Then you would just buy your barrel, install the timer and set/bolt to the stand. Make them for 30 gallon and 55 gallon barrels. This way, it wouldn't be so #@!* expensive!

Funny thing, I was on a road trip and saw the featured feeder at a ACE Hardware store in Lampassas a few days ago. The great thing about the design is the cage begins about an inch below the spinner plate. The corn is thrown through this gap, not hitting the cage. I talked to a guy that was buying two while I was there, he had a few on his place and was adding more. Coons try like hell, but can't get to the corn, motor, spinner or feed cavity. I would have bought one, but had no room for it.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

So much truth to that, it almost isn’t funny

RamBall36 on this forum does (or did) build such a unit.
You supply the barrel and timer unit up
