Currently have a gas grill for daily/weekly grillin, but interested in doing more grilling w brisket, ribs etc to get the right flavor. Help me from making a costly mistake- can I achieve this with a Weber type charcoal grill or will I need a barrel type smoker set up. Brand recommendations? Yes I’m a novice with longer cooking times required w briskets etc. thanks in advance.

Look on Craigs list, a lot of folks have gone to electric smokers.

When I looked on CL for smokers majority of them were retail prices for used ones.

You can catch great deals that anybody can afford on MES at academy.

No kidding. My buddies trailer smoker was stolen few months ago and been looking for it there. Folks are proud of their smokers. He bought his for $5K 5 years ago from a custom dealer and would sell for $10K on CL now compared to what is out there!!! Sucks!! Hope they rot in hell. I loved that thing!! It was one of a kind.

Go to Wally World and get the Pit Boss Classic for $396. I bought one thinking it would break me in to pellet smokers and I'd move up to a Yoder or Rec Tec. Pit Boss is still on my patio and cooks everything wonderfully.

Old Smokey at Academy $69 for the large $49 for the middle size. Get the extended legs.

You can get fairly good results from a weber on smaller cuts of meat, but not if you are doing a whole Brisket, IMO. When looking for a smoker, get the thickest metal you can find. It will hold the heat in better and makes it much easier to regulate temps. If the metal is too thin, you have to use too much wood, creating way too much smoke. I would rather have a good quality small barrel smoker than a low quality big smoker.

Saw this Kingsford Professional at HD. It looked really decent and was fairly heavy. It's shown at $499 on their site but the one in the store was marked about $40 less. May catch it on sale since its after Labor Day

As I've said before I'm a Weber guy but bought a Masterbuilt electric smoker this winter on clearance at Academy. 1st brisket. Pretty moist and tender.

For that price point I'd go with a Rec Tec Bullseye. It can get high heat for grilling fast and can be used for low and slow for pork butt, brisket and ribs.

Backwoods Smoker

Get a cheaper off set smoker at academy or home depot(where I purchased mine). The one I purchased seals better than what I saw at academy. Have cooked ribs, pork shoulders, brisket, sausage and chicken on it. Makes great food and for how thin it is, I am impressed with its ability to hold temperature
