just a warning..PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHILE FILLINg FEEDERS..I hunt by myself..am 63 years old and sometimes i make mistakes..almost made a costly one this last weekend filling feeders..i hunt alone do all the work by myself..so i have no options..went to check on feeder to refill if needed..i set up ladder and made sure it was level and stable..well i climbed up and got to the last step..grabbed hold of the top of the can and viloa..it was empty and i damn near pulled it on top of me..the leg came off the bracket..now i was hanging on for deer life..and almost lost my ballance..Thank God i caught my ballance in time..lessonlearned..you think i would have known better..but my point is accidents do happen..yall be careful out there..it could have been a bad ending..happy hunting..fyi..my neck is swelling..its almost time,boys..im chaising my wife around the house shes getting there..lol

I had full deer feeder buckle and come down on head. Thank God my Dad was there when it happened or I'd of lost my life.

Do yourself a favor and invest in stand and fill feeder(s). It'll be the best hunting investment you've ever made up

So glad you are ok. I'm almost 70 and fill four feeders by myself. A couple of times, I came close to having an accident when on the ladder with 50lbs of corn over my shoulder. I second your advice and state one can not be careful enough when out there alone. I don't want to loose anybody to an accident.

I can relate as I've been drawing social security for a few years....

Before I built the rack/roof/observation deck on my Mule, I used a folding ladder and had a couple of close calls.
These days, I just pull up next to the feeder in Mule, pitch corn on the deck and climb up there.
It's nice to have a 4x4 floor to stand on while filling the feeder!
Wish I would have done this years ago..

Cheers,

BTDT and that is one of reasons I've cut legs off and gone to stand and fill. Best decision I've made and it has not had any down effect on animal useage. I too mostly hunt and maintain feeders/stands alone and try to take extra precaution to avoid accidents. Yes everyone please be carefull

I cut my legs down shorter, drove T post angled at each leg. Need good coon/squirrel cage around spinner plate for sure and cattle panel pens. I have 2 sets that only have barbed wire fence to keep cattle out but allows hogs in and some large sounders and huge boars. So far, no problem with them damaging cage/motor. Be sure you have your solar panel mounted high and use steel flex or 1/2 conduit to run wire if outside feeder container. Best thing I ever did was cutting down my homemade feeders to stand and fill. 12 v slings better circumference than 6 v at lower height but on my 6v set the deer still come right up to it.

6 yrs ago now when I bought my corn feeders I got them all with shorter legs. So now I can stand on the bed of the truck or ranger to fill the feeders. They all have eliminator style plates and feed pens. Lot less work and danger.

I took one of my old ones and cut metal legs for it just high enough so i can stand on the ground and put corn in it... also put the cheap feeder timers with the plastic cage around the spinner... been working out fine... a squirrel will eventually chew through them but at $40 and going on 2 seasons it seems logical

Remember when you didn't have a good feeder unless it was 10-12 feet off the ground? smile

We went from 8ft legs and a ladders to 6 foot legs and fill from an ATV / UTV and have now converted several to 4ft legs and fill from our feet. Secure them with t-posts and you'll be fine. We have varmint guards on every feeder regardless of how high they are.

Still prefer my feeders 10-12 foot up. Spreads corn better, more deer can get under/around it, and there's a very small percentage of blocked shots from the feeder

I still like the normal high feeders myself. I was filling one a couple days ago and lifting up 10 bags of corn over my head managed to make my back talk back. I'm 73 and feeling the age anymore, but I just stay out there doin it rather than sit in the recliner and age more. I put out an average of 1,000 lbs a month and sometimes it is a challenge. All my feeders are where I can back up the truck and stand in the bed...but it's still not high enough.

Me too. We use all crank up feeders. Have as far as I can remember and always will. Spend a little money on them and they will nearly last a lifetime. Several of our crank up feeders are 30+ years old. I have filled several off a ladder etc. when filling feeders with buddies etc. and I hate them.

We have the crank up as well. Worth the small amount extra in cost versus a trip to the doctors office or hospital.

That's what I have on my place too. There were some on here that called them "suicide" confused2, I guess if you're stupid enough to never glance at the winch/cable condition or stand directly underneath it while it's up. They were part of the "hunt exactly as I do or you're a fool" crowd. "Were" being the operative word.

Saw a 'hang em high' full fall. luckily no one was under it. It was not the winch or cable that failed as those were looked at for maintenance. It was the bolt holding the pulley, started pulling the tripods down and looking at them all each year after that episode.
I too prefer the higher up feeders for better spread and allow more deer to gather and come under feeders and protect antlers, but as I age and become I hope a little wiser, safety and ease have been more on my forefront thought.

We had a pully break a few years ago, had a cable break last year. Have a few hang em high feeders and their pulley system does require some work. I have been around them all my life and it was beat into my head not to walk under them.

I've got one 55gal feeder (my pig feeder) left to convert to stand n fill. Just waiting for the PROTHROW guys to get their website back up so I can order the base. Filled it this past weekend and vowed it was the last time to climb that ladder.

Glad you're okay. I'm getting up there as well. I went to ground feeders last year. No more ladders or standing on the corner of the truck. Like you, most of the time I'm alone.
