...particularly when hunting dangerous game. No reason not to place a 2nd, well aimed shot into a downed animal if you are in a hurry to see it. This guy, an experienced hunter, got in a hurry and got severely injured with wounds to the face, torso, and arms. Bottom line is that if you are physically attacked by a bear (defensive or offensive), then virtually every time, you are going to end up at the hospital or the morgue.

Another "experienced" hunter attacked by a moose he thought was dead.

One of my favorite quotes by Capstick from his books is "kill it, then kill it again" . Something like that anyway, think he was talking about leopards. I've shot more than one critter laying on the ground when if it looks like it might get up again.

Shoot. Eat. Repeat.

Yikes. Hunter must not have listened for the death moan. Fortunately my archery black bear kills were successful without incident.

It probably happens more than we think.

Dead animals and unloaded guns hurt and kill a lot of folks.

What was the ear tag number of the bear?

The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

That was stock footage and not the actual bear involved, so tag number has no relevance.

I have no doubt. Common sense, I bet, cures the majority of this.

I once walked up on a "dead" doe back in PA and just when I was about to tap it (I always stand above and behind and check for breathing, when none is observed, I give them a little tap on the hind quarter) it jumped up and ran. Talk about startled lol. I swore I didn't see any breathing. Not a mauling like this bear story of course, but it will still get your heart beating smile .

Early in my pig hunting experiences, I shot a pig from a tall stand.
Waited 20 plus minutes and it never moved so I walked down to drag it off.
Got there and the pig wasn't laying where it was when I got down out of stand...he was standing in the brush behind me about 30 feed popping it's jaws and looking my direction and seemed to not be too happy about being shot.
Gun was still loaded and I pumped 2 in his chest at close range and put him down before he moved.
Scared me a little and taught me a lesson I still remember today.

Cheers,

Learned this the hard way when a "dead" bobcat latched onto my leg.

Just had a buddy that shot 2 pigs, drug them together to take some pics including some selfies. He went and got his truck and when he got back to where they were the bigger of the 2 pigs was gone. Could have been bad if it would have come alive while he was taking the pics.

That's my $.02. Here's you're change!!

Placed a crossbow bolt into a 250lb boar one morning and watched as he ran off. Went looking for him 45 minutes later and found him. From about 10-15 yards away I threw a nice size rock at him and suddenly his eyes opened up and it was game on second round. He saw me and gave his best charge and luckily the bolt still in him had limited his mobility enough for me to flank left and make a fatal double lung shot with my next bolt. When I released that second bolt I was out of there. Pure pucker factor for sure.

I wouldn't want to shoot a bobcat, you'll mess up the pelt. Maybe carry a bat and club it?
