Labor Day Weekend is perhaps the official start of hunting and football seasons. Lots of folks will no doubt be headed out to dove fields and deer leases to get ready for everything that comes with cooler nights and bigger game. As always, there will be the dove hunters chasing after last minute hunting licenses and Hunter Education certificates, and a mad rush on seed, fertilizer, and diesel. And hopefully, there will be time to throw something on a grill or into an ice chest. Yes, it's going to be tough to hang around the office on Friday. But remember...

back in the 60's I still remember around early to mid August my dad saying it's gonna rain here pretty soon, all the area farmers/ranchers would perk up around the coffee shop and ask him how he knew? He said it will rain pretty good before Sept. 1st and screw up opening weekend of dove season. Back in those days if memory serves me, dove season was only the first 2 weeks of Sept. (might have only been 10 days) and could only hunt after 12:00 noon, at least in the counties we hunted. Dad picked up me after school every day during the week and we would go hunt somewhere. Get home at dark thirty and dress out birds as mom was getting the skillet ready. After the TPWD extended the hours to be all day and extended the season out more days, we still hunted pretty much every day in the evenings for almost every day of the season. The first 20 or so years of my life, the only way I ever had dove cooked was pan or German fried, which is still my preference, but then some friends started doing the bacon wrapped with a slice of jalapeno and onion which is also very good. I still have the old bolt action 410 I started hunting with when I was about 5 years old. I just don't have the easy access to hunting locations these days

Not for me this weekend or for the next 2 weeks or so. Got bitten by a tick about 2 weeks ago and it caused an infection. Dr. put me on Doxycycline for 10 days then renewed my prescription for another 10 days today since the lymph node was still a little swollen. Luckily it was not Lyme disease according to my doctor since the tick was not biting me that long when I felt it, just got a bite from one tick that caused an infection. He told me I was smart to get to him as soon as I noticed the tick bite and lymph node both start to swell after 2-3 days. The Doxy will cover the infection or Lyme so I am covered. One bad side effect is that you can sunburn really quickly so I am not going to hunt in a long sleeve shirt and wear sunscreen at the same time. Luckily I have not had any other side effect from the Doxy. Like most on here I have found a who lot of ticks on me and been bitten way to many times to even count. Just took this once to change my attitude to an old tick bite.

Just took this once to change my attitude to an old tick bite. Good luck with a quick recovery. FWIW, I bought several of the long sleeve Magellan SPF shirts at Academy $20-$25 each. They are moisture wicking and very cool with anywhere from 30 - 50 SPF, depending on which ones you buy. Those and a wide brim hat keep me from burning and no sunscreen used. I wear them every trip during the summer months. Shirts

He's bound to have had one of the best owners ever. Very sorry for this sad time, but you've done well brother. RIP Arthur.

Thanks, he was a great buddy, pretty healthy until 2 years ago when he had trouble getting around. Stayed at home since then but ruled the back yard and the house. Put him on a hill overlooking his favorite pond....
