What seeds work best just broadcast on bare soft ground. We have had on going dozer work on the ranch we hunt for the last year. There are a few acres of soft bare dirt within sight of one of my stands that I was thinking about spreading some seeds on with a spreader.

Oats, cereal rye, clover. Or you can do peas/beans walk around and press them in/ kick dirt over them, then broadcast oats.

Are you wanting to use it as a deer food plot or just ground cover for bare soil?
Depends on what area of the state the place is in and how soft soil you're talking about.
Different seeds have different planting depths, too deep it won't grow, still a little early in most parts to plant fall / winter varieties.

If simple is what you're after,
Could use wheat, or wheat & oat mix or any of the Turner fall deer mix, MBS fall deer type mixes or similar.
Ground cover, annual rye.
Past that you can get as complex & detailed as you want using all sorts of species.
I wouldn't throw a whole lot of money on the ground without soil samples & proper soil amendments, then pray for rain.

If there is livestock on the property forget it unless you can fence the area off.

Oats and pea's as rickym said. I'd use a rake to cover them up a little.

Are their cattle or livestock on the place? Look at native legume plants that will be there as perennials or reseeding annuals of both fall and spring types. They will give your years of production on those edges where there is competition for moisture and sunlight.

The cattle have been on my half of the ranch the last year. I'm thinking he will move the cattle to the other half soon since his fence construction is almost done. The Dozer may be working all next year at the rate he's been improving the place. Something that deer prefer more than cattle would be good. I can probably round up something to drag over the seeds if I plant something. Right now I'm just thinking about it.

All the dozer work will likely stir up the natural seed bank in the soil, so over time natural vegetation should recover, but I'd bet $5 the rancher would be open to throwing in with you some how (he likely has a tractor and some equipment), say if you supply the seed like oats, use his equipment, or his help with it, then after deer season he can turn the cows on it for some short time graze.

The rancher plants a couple hundred acres of wheat each year. Closest field is a couple miles though. I like the clover idea. May look for more info on something like that.

There are many cultivars of clover, some planted in spring, some do better planted in fall, so don't just take someones word without researching it out, could be a waste of $.. I know arrow leaf clover is known to do well in much of Texas due to climate, also a good re-seeder where many popular ones are not. It is the one often recommended v=by biologist here for deer fp's.

To get the best boots on the ground recommendation, schedule a time with the county agriculture agent, a free service. They are loaded with info on native browse (often best bet to improve for wildlife). Many AG offices also have some equipment, or other resources to borrow or rent for various projects.
