Check the internet on blackpowder hunting sites you can learn a lot, then find a friend that hunts with one.

There are a multitude of different Muzzle Loaders,If you are interested in traditional then look at some information on cap lock or Flint Lock.

If you want to go with a modern inline that uses shot gun primers there are many of them to choose from as well. That is probity why the comet was made to look on the internet.

Do you have a general Idea of what kind of muzzle loader you want?

I think I would be more interested in the modern inline. I have been doing some research on different models/makes. Really I am looking for a combo that is cheap and accurate. I won't be hunting much with this gun.

I personally like Triple 7 pellets and Hornady MonoFlex ML 250 grain sabots (.50 caliber). However, part of the fun of muzzle stuffers is figuring out what shoots best (tons of powder and projectile choices out there).


I've been an avid muzzle loading hunter for over 30 years, and I still love it. Oftentimes take my ML during modern gun season.

Muzzle-loaders.com is the place to go. I did the Optima in stainless and synthetic last year and could not beat the deal. It ran about $250 with scope rings.

Me first rifle was .45 kentucky back in d 70's. Taken deer & hogs. Be 1st ta say "That dont make me an expert.
Recently added ta me collection. 50cal in-line. Do ta health issues, the heavy barrell end not able ta suport it. Been looking for .45 in-line, just personal choice, couldnt find any.

The powder, caps, & flint tis what makes the differance in muzzleloaders.

TC Impact. Affordable and accurate. Blackhorn 209 powder, Fiocci primers, and 250 Gr. Hornady SST's do the trick. Legitimate 200 yard combo.

I bought a Remington Ultimate Muzzleloader never having hunted with one before. Read and watched youtube video's on them before I purchased. Glad I did, the primer is a cut down 308 casing versus a small T209 which I fumble with due to large hands. I shoot the pellets it recommends, which I like versus caring loose powder. Have dropped two Kansas whitetails one at 150 yards, the other at 200 yards with it. I recommend it......I use the Leupold Ultimate Slam scope on it, perfect match.

I use from 90-100 grains of BlackHorn 209 powder,(yes I got the special 209 powder Breech Plug), with Harvester Goldtip Scorpion 300grain bullets wrapped in their awesome crush rib sabots.I ignite it all off with a Federal 209a Primers.
( I could write a small story on how I tried a lot of various pellets and powder and various Powerblets, Aerotips and other off the shelf bullets to unsatisfactory results for me...but thats all part of the "fun" right huh? )

Be ready to clean your gun. Still shooting TC Hawken .50 bought in 1975. Loose powder and a cap.
