I’ve had one on camera now since 2014 (estimated three year old then) and he got better every year until this season, when he lost some length on his cottles. I’ll rummage around to try to find photos of his progression.

Looks like Hill Country habitat.
This year was unusually dry, which can reduce the amount of food for them depending on the specifics for the property.
So, an offyear for antlers may change next year with improved rainfall and thus range conditions.
Just another variable.

Just another variable. We weren’t really dry until after he had pretty much finished growing this year. We feed a lot of cottonseed and the axis really hammer it in January and February along with free choice protein. I already killed a pretty good axis buck a few weeks ago, so I don’t really need to go hunt another. I imagine this guy will drop sometime in October, which will likely keep him safe from other hunters when WT rifle season opens. He rutted pretty hard last season and busted off one of his cottles last August. Maybe he’ll bounce back to his 2017 form in 2019.

Most Texas herds are in hard horns by July 15. That’s not guaranteed.

not sure on the axis, but your rock crop sure looks like it is growing well
Stuff my dad said in the deer blind
"I can dive deeper and come up drier" "did you do that?"
