So, i am preparing for a hunt for geese in Canada and am trying to decide what is the easier option to get my gun over there. Just looking for advice if it is a better option to mail the gun to Canada or carry it on the plane with me. Any advice is appreciated as this is my first time doing a hunt of any kind like this!!!

When I went on deer hunts back 10-12 yrs ago, I took my rifle with me. I was advised ahead of time to go online and get the required gun documents to declare you guns. Back then it was fairly simple if you had the paperwork in order.

Just check it in a hard side locked case. So easy. Go online and fill out the form and pay the fee so you don’t have to do it at destination.

I have never flown into Canada with a gun, but have driven several times. I went online prior to the trip and researched it on the very helpful Canadian customs site. You print off the forms, fill them out, and its pretty painless at the border. They do have a few strange rules like your gun case has to lock, but if you're flying, you will already be in compliance.

Also pay attention to the paperwork you'll need to bring your firearm BACK into the US.

Print and fill out but do not sign your Canadian firearm forms. Need 3 copies.
Canada law once you are there requires gun to be cased (completely enclosed and unloaded)between 30 min after legal sunset time and 30 min before legal sunrise time (this includes walking in/out of your hunting location until legal hunting time and the game wardens do enforce)

Lot depends on your airline, hard case with locks. TSA will open your case with you at the airport in US and then have you lock it. You keep the key. Most all require ammo to be in separate luggage. Some airlines require it to be locked others just allow it to be in a checked bag. There are limitations on ammo and since it is a goose hunt vs rifle cartridge, I assume you will purchase shells once you get to Canada or from outfitter.

Also suggest you go to US Custom office and fill out the US declaration form for your firearm and any other equipment of value (camera, GoPro, etc); have 3 copies made and laminate (keep one in the storage with each piece of declared property, keep one in your possession with your paperwork and leave one at home with your important papers and future reference. I did this years ago for some guns, cameras, etc and still use the exact same declaration that is laminated to this date.

It is easy to Canada (in my experience on Delta) but do your homework, have your paperwork and be nice and prepared. They are no nonsense and be sure you have no federal criminal or DUI/DWI on your record as they probably will not let you in (see that happen to a few on a couple of trips)

Good luck it will be awesome
